High Fructose Corn Syrup Might Be Linked To Diabetes, But New Study Doesn’t Show That

High Fructose Corn Syrup Might Be Linked To Diabetes, But New Study Doesn't Show That

Don’t let anybody make you believe that high-fructose corn syrup is harmless just because it’s “not more fattening than sugar. Animal studies have shown can be bad for memory and learning, and human studies have linked high consumption of HFCS with cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. But a new study “linking” corn syrup consumption with type 2 diabetes is pitifully flimsy. More »

Oh Good, Coca-Cola Is Switching Sweeteners…To More High-Fructose Corn Syrup

Oh Good, Coca-Cola Is Switching Sweeteners...To More High-Fructose Corn Syrup

When I started reading headlines this morning that heralded a change in Coca-Cola‘s sweeteners, I was pumped. Then I read that it just means they’re going to use high-fructose corn syrup in even more of their soda. This means the Mexican Coke that so many of us love–because it’s made with cane sugar–might start tasting a lot more like American Coke. And it’s not just bad news for flavor; it’s also kind of frightening, given that high-fructose corn syrup has been tied with higher incidence of obesity and even hamper your ability to learn and remember information. Study Confirms Corn Syrup Is The Devil—For Your Body And Brain

A new study out from the Journal of Physiology says that a diet high in sugar might affect your ability to think and learn. The negative effects of sugar aren’t new information, but this is the first study that suggests that sweeteners might be bad for your brain as well as your body.  Don’t get too alarmed, though: the main culprit is the dietary devil, corn syrup. Michael Pollan Says High Fructose Corn Syrup Isn’t Worse Than Sugar

Michael Pollan Says High Fructose Corn Syrup Isn't Worse Than Sugar

Michael Pollan‘s books are practically the bible for socially-, eco-, and nutrition-conscious shoppers; Omnivore’s Dilemma practically taught all of America’s liberal, upper-middle class how to eat. And it also spawned the now-widely-held belief that high fructose corn syrup is the biggest evil in the American diet (also: a really hilarious SNL skit). So it’s surprising that the author and food industry expert is backpedaling on his stance that HFCS is worse than sugar; now, he thinks it’s all a wash. More »

France Banned Ketchup From Schools To Preserve Culture; We Think It’s A Good Nutrition Choice, Too

France Banned Ketchup From Schools To Preserve Culture; We Think It's A Good Nutrition Choice, Too

France has banned ketchup from its school cafeterias, causing many to ask what’s really so bad about the popular way to dip your french fries. Apparently, French officials don’t have anything against the stuff nutritionally; their reasoning for the ban is cultural. Mayonnaise, not ketchup, is the traditional way to dip your fries in France, and they don’t want future generations of French schoolchildren to forget. Personally, we like it both ways (ketchup might be the go-to sauce on this side of the pond, but when we dip our fries in mayonnaise, we feel oh-so cultured and worldly). But whatever you think about the taste, we have to say: Giving ketchup the boot was a great choice for nutrition. More »

The Truth About Sugar: How Much Is Too Much

The Truth About Sugar: How Much Is Too Much

You’ve heard it over and over again: cut down on sugar, avoid foods with ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, if sugar were invented today, it would be illegal because it’s so bad for you (OK, I’m paraphrasing here, but I do remember hearing that one). If you have taken these health warnings seriously and viewed them as something more than a challenge of your will-power, you’re not alone. According to a new study, Americans are getting better at reducing sugar—but still not good enough. More »

Video: SNL’s High Fructose Corn Syrup Spoof

Video: SNL's High Fructose Corn Syrup Spoof

This Saturday Night Live spoof of the Corn Refiners Association commercial, featuring two moms at a birthday party, debating the pros and cons of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), is hilarious. A fruit punch-drinking Mom defends her beverage against criticism: “…it’s made from corn, doesn’t have artificial ingredients, and like sugar it’s fine in moderation.” Oh wait, that quote is from the real commercial. SNL writers didn’t have to reach far to ridicule the CRA’s ad for high fructose corn syrup, in which the party host tells off a concerned parent who doesn’t want her kids drinking HCFS More »
