Ridiculous Little Mermaid Plastic Surgery Ad is Offensive to Women And Girls

Ridiculous Little Mermaid Plastic Surgery Ad is Offensive to Women And Girls

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Man, I’d love to see a plastic surgery ad featuring a Disney princess character commonly marketed towards children. That would really make me want to go under the knife.” No? Me either. But apparently the people behind Clinica Dempere, a plastic surgery center in Venezuela, thought that would be just the thing to entice new customers to their practice. Check out their ad featuring Ariel of The Little Mermaid: More »

UK Beauty Contest Completely Misses The Point Of ‘Natural Beauty’

UK Beauty Contest Completely Misses The Point Of 'Natural Beauty'

Lookout Samantha Brick: A nationwide “natural beauty” contest in England has crowned blond-haired 18-year old Florence Colgate “the most naturally beautiful woman in the country.” Ugh. There’s already something perverse in the fetishization of natural beauty; it’s especially weird and misguided to celebrate natural beauty by honoring the lass who looks as close as possible to Barbie without surgery. Breast Implants Get Old, Too—One More Reason To Stay Away From The Silicone

Breast Implants Get Old, Too—One More Reason To Stay Away From The Silicone

Most women who get breast implants aren’t thinking about getting those babies replaced any time soon. But according to the British Implant Information Society, breast augmentation isn’t meant to be permanent—in fact, most modern implants are only good for 20-25 years. What? This means a woman who gets breast augmentation surgery at, say, 25 should plan to remove or replace her implants at 45 or 50. Someone who got implants as a teen (hey, it’s not uncommon in some countries) and wanted to keep up her cup size could end up having to replace the implants twice in her lifetime. All of this adds up to greater cost, and greater risk—of danger or deformity. Can we agree that this is greater reason to avoid breast implants in the first place, too? More »

Jennifer Aniston Admits To Fillers and Botox; Has Surprisingly Healthy Attitude Towards Beauty

Jennifer Aniston Admits To Fillers and Botox; Has Surprisingly Healthy Attitude Towards Beauty

Botox scares the crap out of me, but I always feel somewhat refreshed when a celebrity who looks supernaturally good for her age admits that she’s gone there. Which is why I think it’s pretty great that Jennifer Aniston admitted to having had injectable fillers, botox and spray tan, as well as getting her sunspots “zapped” off in her recent interview with InStyle. Because if she can admit that she doesn’t do it without the help of a good dermatologist (at the very least), then at least we’re all getting a little more honest about what it really takes to look like the “sexiest woman in the world.” More »

Illegal Butt Injections Hospitalize Another Woman With Bad Body Image

Illegal Butt Injections Hospitalize Another Woman With Bad Body Image

Oneal Ron Morris, better known as the “Fix-a-Flat Booty Doctor” since injecting patients’ bodies with tire sealant and cement, isn’t the only one under fire for bad cosmetic surgery this month: Lauretta Cheek of Greensboro, North Carolina was arrested and charged for injecting an exotic dancer’s buttocks with a disfiguring unknown substance. These stories are disturbing for several reasons, but Cheek’s case forces me to wonder: Why are women feeling so bad about their bodies that they’re willing to let an unlicensed “doctor” inject random substances into their bodies. Red In The Face: Is Surgery The Answer To Blushing?

Red In The Face: Is Surgery The Answer To Blushing?

We blush when we’re embarrassed, but many of us become embarrassed when we blush. It’s a catch-22 that some people are so affected by, they are now opting for surgery to prevent blushing altogether. Called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy, the surgery was previously used to prevent excess sweating, but surgeons in the UK have discovered that it’s also effective for treating uncontrollable blushing. I’ve always viewed blushing as “adorable” and nothing more, and wasn’t aware just how irksome it can be to some people. But I say, unless you’re bleeding or dying, there’s no need for this kind of surgery. More »

Study Says Liposuction Is Temporary, But Body Confidence Lasts Forever

Study Says Liposuction Is Temporary, But Body Confidence Lasts Forever

Actress Camryn Manheim (The Practice) had a one-woman show called “Wake Up! I’m Fat!”, a title I’ve always loved. It’s not that I think people should start eating pizza and cakes in record numbers; I just love the sentiment that, hey, guess what, we’re not robots or fitness models. We’re human, we’re flawed, and sometimes we gain weight. We’re not oblivious to our imperfections. We’re dealing with them. We know when we’re past the point of healthy and we’re doing the best we can, but laying more insecurity and shame on our bodies is the last thing we need. If only the women in this liposuction study could have seen Manheim’s one-woman show, because it seems all they want to hear is “thinspirational” notions, rather than the facts: liposuction is a temporary form of weight-loss, and the fat comes back.

Botox Not Only Freezes Faces, It May Cause Other Muscles to Atrophy

Botox Not Only Freezes Faces, It May Cause Other Muscles to Atrophy

A new Canadian study may have Botox users attempting to raise a few eyebrows. Led by Rafael Fortuna, a Master’s student at the University of Calgary, the report found that rabbits injected with botulinum toxin A, a.k.a. Botox, experienced muscle weakness in areas other than the injection site.

The results, which will be published in the Journal of Biomechanics, claim that six months after the injections had been given, muscle loss and atrophy were seen in muscles elsewhere in the body.

This is terrible news for pageant queens, many of whom already lack the ability to convey emotion with their faces, and who now also risk losing the strength to wave during parades. More »
