As we’ve spent time strolling up and down the boardwalk we’ve noticed that men like to look, nay stare, at pregnant women. The eyes begin at the face, travel down to the belly and back up to the face again. For good measure there may be one more round trip between the face and belly. Sometimes it seems innocent, other times downright creepy.

We thought it might be isolated to her, but noticed other pregnant women garnering the same intrigued examination as if they were a three dollar bill. However we also noticed that pregnant couples had a sort of non-verbal communication executed almost entirely in passing that more or less said “yay, babies!” A nod, smile or quick “hi” is all that’s needed to express this pregnant solidarity. We noticed a couple of late 8-monthers started throwing mommy gang signs as they passed; luckily they were both from the ‘Cribs’ so nobody got emotional.

It’s like a little club of expectant parents blending in to the crowd, but so excited to encounter some of their own. Although we didn’t get very deeply into conversation with any of them, it is nice to see that other people are as excited as we are about the promise of a new life.
