My daughter began quilting when she had to wait in doctors’ offices and hospitals during her husband ’s seige with cancer. She chose projects she could hand stitch while she sat there.

Nowadays, I carry small projects like artists’ trading cards or fabric postcards that can fit into a small plastic bag, are easy to carry in a car, in an airport or on a plane.

Making fabric yo-yos fits well into the portable project category. All you need are your yo-yo circles, needle and thread, and a small pair of scissors. I have an ongoing yo-yo pile with circles of various sizes to use in numerous projects.

Artist Trading Cards, Inchies or Fabric Post Cards are ideal for portable projects. You also can incorporate mixed media into these.

Knitting and Crocheting also fall into this area. I recall having an afghan over my lap in the car as I crocheted. My mother-in-law worked on crocheted squares which she later stitched together for an afghan. I also knitted scarves, as has my daughter when traveling.

What portable projects do you work on?
