When my twins were born, I always believed I’d be a mother who could protect them. With the recent news of Jamie Lynn Spears becoming pregnant and the rumors that claim Casey Aldridge may be guilty of statutory rape, I have to admit, I’m growing concerned over my own boys as they are growing nearer the age of 16 – the age I let them begin dating.

A little quick history:

My twins were born premature and were not ready to begin Kindergarten at the ‘average’ age so I chose to hold them out and send them to preschool instead. They began kindergarten the following year.

In first grade, I had one that was getting average grades, but struggled terribly to maintain that. I made the painful decision to hold him back a year.

Where does this leave us now?

I have one son who will turn 18 the Spring of his Junior year and the other his Sophomore year.

What happens when my sons want to date girls from their school? What happens, IF, like most teens, they make STUPID decisions and have sex with a girl who is in their class but is under age?

What are your thoughts on the statutory rape laws and who they protect? Do you think those laws are abused by angry parents wanting to get back at their daughters boyfriend, whom they hated from date one?

Statutory Rape Laws and Who They Protect

I can’t count the number of women I know who think making their boyfriend jealous is cute – but what they fail to realize is jealousy is glossy, sugar coated way of saying they don’t trust you – and what’s cute about that?

Jealousy – possessiveness and controlling behavior is dangerous, no matter if you are a man or a woman. If your partner is showing signs of jealousy or possessiveness, it’s time to break it off.

I’d be interested in hearing some of your tales on on this topic. Did you have a jealous, controlling lover? How did you handle it? Did you break up? Did they leave?

I am curious! I’ve been there before and as scary as it was, I did leave – but not without the guy running me off the road and totaling a nearly new car.

I didn’t press charges. I didn’t call the cops. I simply told the guy that if he ever came around me again, I’d turn him in.

It’s a scary place to be, but I’d much rather be on this side of the relationship, sharing the experience with you – then to be in the relationship still and scared to death – or even worse – dead.

Possessive Boyfriends

It aimed to help open the reader’s eyes to several warning signs on potentially abusive relationships.

Despite the ambiguity, therapists yesterday said there are certain traits that are at least indicators of something potentially harmful.

These would include a person who monopolizes your time, insists you check in several times a day, is jealous, degrades you and blames you for his or her bad behavior, said Michael Barfield, executive director of Outreach Teen and Family Services in Mt. Lebanon.

Threats — or, of course, physical abuse — are glaring warning signs of something terribly amiss. “When people make threats, then the line is definitely crossed,” said Dr. Oscar Bukstein, associate professor of psychiatry at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

But often a controlling mate knows how to camouflage bad behavior in front of parents and transform himself into Mr. Charm. “He is so mannerly,” Mr. Barfield said. “Johnny is so nice. When Johnny is away, he is a different person. You say, ‘How could I have not seen this?’ You are not necessarily going to see it.”

It was advised that if parents wish to help steer their children away from such an event, it’s best if they start talking to them about these things before their children reaches the age wherein they start dating.

What if you’re way past that stage? Well, I reckon communication is still key. I’d say never give up and never put down your guard.

Warning Signs on Potentially Abusive Relationships

As if casual sex weren’t risky enough…

A woman has been arrested on suspicion that she tied up a man during sex, then stabbed him repeatedly with a knife and told him she likes to drink blood, police said.

Tiffany Sutton, 23, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault Tuesday night at a Tempe home where she and the victim were living, according to authorities.

The man, whose identity was not released, told police he had consented to being tied up but became scared when the woman attacked him with a knife.

He eventually freed himself and ran away, but Sutton chased him with a pickax, police said.

Since Mr. Anonymous has lived to tell the tale, I wonder just how adventurous his dates will be from now on?

Could you even imagine? Thinking you’re going for a night of casual, no-strings, hot sex only to open your eyes to a pickax coming right at you?
