Dating Service Endorsed by Psychology Today

A DATING agency is being set up in the Island to assist people with a learning disability to find romance.

The agency, which will be called Kindred Spirits and will be open to anyone aged 18 upwards with a learning disability, has been made possible by a £20,000, three-year donation from the directors of F Le Gallais and Sons. (Source: ThisisJersey.com)

As reported, the dating service was scheduled to start in August, spearheaded by David Harburn who knows that it’s difficult to find a mate if you have a learning disability since he was born with cerebral palsy. The service aims to achieve what any other normal dating service does, to match up men and women. The service will also cater to people who are looking for a same sex relationship.

I’m both surprised and happy to learn that such a service exists. I believe that no one really wants to live the rest of their life alone. Yes, even for people with learning disability. I know we all have the same needs, too.

Now, it’s time to bring some news to the people who works the news. Heehee.

I must say that my impression of the work of these people whose careers are in the media industry, is that it’s highly stressful. Deadlines aren’t just month end reports or weekly status updates but daily and up-to-the-minute briefs that are even counter-checked for accuracy. Uh, well — ideally speaking, that is.

Come to think of it, since we’re on the topic of accuracy, which can be synonymous to perfectionism and admitting that there’s a bit of science involved, it’s considered a fact from numerous observations that they do make mistakes, hence, are not perfect. They are still human after all — typos and bad editing are normal occurences.

Brings me to think now that they don’t live an ideal life. The work pressures and leading an ‘always on the go’ kind of lifestyle may have driven them to isolate themselves from society and/or given them less alternatives when it comes to the matter of finding a mate.

I love orange juice.

You’re given a certain amount of time to get to know an X number of guy or girl participants and make a decision if you’d be interested to see them again.

Based from experience, I was only given 5 minutes each and there were 25 guys, so do the math! Since it was my first time, I thought there wasn’t enough time to make a proper decision so it turned out a disastrous experience for me. However, I’ve learned that if you make use of the right questions to aid you in making the right decision then it won’t be as terrible as mine was.

Apart from getting the name, top 5 questions that I’ll be asking are [not in particular order]:

• 1. If you are to go out with friends or on a date, where will you go?

  I want to establish whether if he’s an extrovert or an introvert. I want to know if he’d hang out in places where I like to hang out. And it somehow tells me just how secure he is with himself. Don’t you find a guy who’s an individual so attractive?

• 2. What are your hobbies or what do you do for fun?

  I like someone who has a life. I want to know whether I can learn something new with this person if I am to see him again. I’m sure you’d agree that it’s no fun to date a boring person, right?

• 3. Have you traveled much? If yes, where? If not, do you plan to?

  I love traveling and if I am to date a guy, he has to share the same passion for adventure. The relationship will not work if I keep flying off to exotic locations and he gets left behind, now will it?

• 4. I’ll ask a leading question that can determine his relationship with his parents and the rest of his family. This will depend on the flow of the conversation.

  What can I say? Personally, I believe that a guy’s relationship with his family reflects his true character. Family is important, don’t you agree?

• 5. What’s your reason for participating?

  Of course, I don’t want to hook up with someone who’s desperate, they tend to be the stalker-type. Ha. And I’m curious to know, is all. Hahaha. Wouldn’t you be?

I’ve chosen these questions because it can provide me with important traits of the individual and weigh it with mine, to come up with a decision. I’ve limited the questions to 5, granted that it can be answered in less than a minute each since he needs to ask me a few himself.
