On one hand, I have to applaud Mr. Warwak’s efforts. There is so much misinformation about nutrition being taught in American schools. Remember the four food groups we learned about growing up? Total BS from a health perspective – the people behind the food groups (meat, dairy, fruit/veggies, and grains) were more concerned with protecting and promoting the meat and dairy industries than they were teaching children how to take care of their bodies properly. It’s their fault that vegetarians still get asked inane questions like “how do you get enough protein in your diet?” And look where all this misinformation is leading Americans, health-wise. Not a pretty picture.

On the other hand, this story reminds me too much of some other past news stories involving teachers/schools imposing their views on students, with disastrous consequences. Children made to feel like pariahs because they didn’t want to participate in a class prayer. Foreigners forced to say the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of each school day. Teachers who claim it is their moral duty to make sure their elementary school students know and accept Jesus. Of course a main difference between these stories and Mr. Warwak’s case is that these examples all involve teachers in the majority stance (Christian and pro-American), while vegans are clearly the minority.

I have to agree that some sort of line has to be established, a line between appropriate and inappropriate ways for a teacher to share ideas with students. It’s interesting to think about where that line should be, and in this case, I’m not sure I know. Warwak has been losing my sympathy as the news has progressed from ‘teacher just trying to teach kids about the benefits of veganism’ to ‘teacher threatening to sue school if all meat and dairy items aren’t removed from the cafeteria immediately’. But the media likes to play up the ‘vegans are radical wackos’ angle, so it’s hard to say how accurate the stories even are.

What do you think about Warwak’s actions and the way he is being treated?
