When my gastroenterologist recommended that I undergo a colonoscopy, the first thing I asked was how common it was for women like me — 27 years old and otherwise healthy — to have such an invasive procedure. She assured me that it was, in fact, very common, but it’s not something that any of my friends have ever experienced. But maybe it’s just not something that comes up in everyday conversation. Of course my doctor was going to assure me that it was a commonplace; after all, colonoscopies are a dime a dozen to a gastroenterologist, and it’s the most effective way to find out what’s really going on down there.
