Anne Hathaway Tells Vogue She Felt 'Deprived' After Les Miserables (Probably Thanks To That Starvation Diet)

Anne Hathaway is on the cover of December’s Vogue, and the cover story is mostly about her experience filming Les Miserables (also coming out in December). And since you can’t talk about Les Mis without talking about her weight, she’s found a new way to say that she starved herself for the role: That she felt “deprived, physically and emotionally.” She gets some points for being creative, but I really wish she’d just be honest about how unhealthy it is to lose 25 pounds for a role. Hey WebMD…This “Diet” Is Just Called “Eating Healthy”

Hey WebMD...This "Diet" Is Just Called "Eating Healthy"

WebMD is reporting on a new study where researchers tested the effects of immediate dieting vs “maintenance first” on obese women. The maintenance first method included teaching the women healthy everyday lifestyle and eating habits, but without an emphasis on weight loss.  The weight-loss group concentrated on problem-solving skills and obviously, reducing body weight. The groups experienced similar amounts of weight loss, but at the end of a year, the maintenance first group had regained less weight than the other group. Starving For A Six-Pack: So You Think You Want Flat Abs? Think Again.

Starving For A Six-Pack: So You Think You Want Flat Abs? Think Again.

It took going to extremes, but I think I’ve finally made peace with my non-perfect stomach. I’ve always wished for flat abs, but never had one. Despite my slender frame (courtesy of my teeny-tiny great grandmother, whose fiery spirit belied her 85-pound person) I’ve long struggled with belly-hate. I’m 5′ 1″ and so short-waisted my hand can span the space between my belly button and bra strap, so I’m just not designed to display a carved up set of abs. Nobody wants to hear the woman in the size zero pants bitch, so I keep it to myself, but my round stomach has been a nemesis that I’ve battled for years to flatten. More »

Dietary Supplements, Weight Loss Drugs Are Lying Liars Full Of Lies, Report Finds

Labeled with hopeful promises about pounds lost, fat burned, and appetites suppressed, most consumers know to be skeptical of diet pills. But according to a new report by the Department of Health and Human Services, the makers of a lot of weight loss drugs (as well as immunity-boosting supplements) are actually breaking the law with some of their claims. What Obie, The Obese Dachshund, Can Teach Us About Weight Loss (And Compassion)

Last week, the world fell in love/felt really bad for Obie, the morbidly obese dachshund who was taken in by a volunteer in Portland. But at twice the size of a healthy dachshund, Obie’s isn’t the tragic tale it could have been. In fact, I think it’s actually really inspiring, particularly for non-canines who are struggling with their weight. Here’s what we can learn from Obie. More »

Infographic: How Women Are Being Set Up For Eating Disorders

Last week, New York Fashion Week pushed dangerous dieting back into the spotlight as models, industry folks, and everyday women found themselves triggered into disordered eating behavior by the fashion industry’s obsession with thinness. Because, in spite of vague promises to be “ambassadors for healthy body image,” magazines, designers, and advertisers are still deeply invested in impossibly tiny female bodies. And, as a result, in eating disorders.  But perhaps this infographic can explain how truly, truly pervasive this obsession is. More »
