Remember how we discussed the new scientific evidence of acupuncture’s stress-relieving effects and why they occur? I began to really think about trying it out, despite the ageda it may give me. Then, I saw this terrible news story regarding a vile acupuncturist who infected his patients with HIV. On purpose. Sixteen times. More
It’s a little surreal how little conventional doctors spend talking with patients about nutrition. But nutrition science hasn’t historically been a big part of med school, even if it is a big factor in chronic disease. More

In some sort of inverse correlation with the amount of media coverage of obesity, doctors are decreasingly likely to discuss the issue with their patients — even when patients have diet and weight-related issues like high blood pressure or diabetes. More

A few months ago, Slate featured a bunch of articles from women explaining why they were opting to live child-free. One woman’s submission about getting her tubes tied at 26 was caught my attention. In the piece, the writer admits to committing a cardinal healthcare sin: She lied to her doctor to get the procedure done. And while for her, the ends seem to justify the means–many doctors just won’t perform a tubal on a young-ish woman–it got me wondering about doctors, patients, and the truth. Just how bad is an exam room fib? And, moreover, is there ever a good reason to lie to your doctor? More

In case you need another reason to be skeptical of your doctor, a new study has found that one in six surgeons have a drinking problem. It’s a scary statistic for sure that is getting our attention and making us wonder: Just who can we trust when it comes to our health? This seems like yet another case of arrogant doctors who now think they can abuse alcohol and still save our lives. More

Today in Daily Mail news … Nutritionists are putting your health at risk! They “ignore alarming symptoms” and rely on non-medically-sanctioned tests. In other words: Nutritionists are not doctors. If you want to eat better, lose weight or figure out food intolerances, a nutrition therapist might help. If you have a serious medical issue, you should probably see a doctor. More

Whether a doctor’s weight interferes with his or her ability to diagnose patients is a question I would normally consider stupid and insulting. But new research shows it might actually be the case—at least when that diagnosis is obesity. According to a study published this month in the journal Obesity, physicians who were overweight or obese were far less likely to diagnose obese patients than docs in the normal weight range. More

Legalizing marijuana would help doctors make better use of it in medical treatments, says the California Medical Association, in an official endorsement for legalizing the drug. California’s largest physician organization couldn’t have picked a better time to announce this update to it’s ‘cannabis policy’: Popular support for pot legalization (for whatever reason) has reached a record high, a new Gallup poll finds. The trial of Michael Jackson‘s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, (also referred to as the ‘Michael Jackson Death Trials’) began yesterday, and kicked off with the release of disturbing evidence pointing to Murray’s failure to responsibly administer medications. A voice recording of Jackson taken by Dr. Murray on his iPhone on May 10, 2009 reveals highly slurred speech that all but proves his doctor should have been aware of the need to adjust his medications. When men are diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia, the first thing doctors usually do is check for internal bleeding. When women are diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia, they’re given an iron supplement and told to eat more broccoli. Why the discrepancy? More

A recent story in the New York Times asks, “Do Secretaries Have a Future?” implying that these days, technology trumps today’s Joan Holloways. Indeed, there are plenty of professionals whose livelihoods have been hurt by the advent of iPhones and DVDs, and they’re not just limited to offices and factories. Even in hospitals and juice bars, there are machines and screens to stand in for the people whose jobs make us healthy and happy. Without them things might be a little cheaper, but ultimately, we’re less healthy and happy. (And for the record, we always think Joanie deserves a job.) More
