You have SO many options when it comes to celebrating Earth Day 2009. It’s not going to be hard to come up with something cool.

You can actually take a few different approaches…

Commit to a one day event.
Commit to long-term change – i.e. rethink your lifestyle and green goals. Do they seem slim? Adjust them; make them stronger or more meaningful.
Commit to taking 5 or more small green steps this year. Each small step adds up, and as you try out more and more smaller green steps it becomes a whole new way of living and thinking.

To get you started following are some basic ideas – nifty things to do on Earth Day 2009 (and beyond):

Have your kids (or you) track your water use with the fun Down the Drain program.

Go see the new Disneynature’s Earth movie premiering on Earth Day or rent a nice earth-minded flick.

Find a fun Earth Day event - i.e. a fair, a conference, a show near you.

Turn off the lights, the heat, gather your friends and family and head outdoors. Take a hike, observe nature, and appreciate what we still have.

Throw out all your toxic household cleaners and make your own homemade green cleaners.

Set up a better home recycling center and commit to recycling year round.

Get involved with the Earth Day Groceries Project (grab the kids!).

Invite five of your non-green pals to hang on Earth Day – see if you can get them on board with green living.

Rethink your landscaping. Take some time to green your yard.

Set a goal to buy at least five organic grocery items each time you shop.

Get involved with greening your local college campus.

Feeling like you can’t go green for one reason or another this Earth Day? You might need to read Six great reasons not to go green.

Are you working on any Earth Day related projects, either quilts, fabric art, tote bags and other items?
If you’re talking about recycling and reusing fabric to make your quilts, then our ancestors of days ago were right in style as they reworked worn clothing, cutting up items they could no longer use for the original purpose. They were into Earth Day projects and never knew it.
Today, quilts are made from recycled fabric and leftover scraps from other projects. Also, quilters and fabric artists create items, such as tote bags and grocery totes with recycling and earth symbols.

Image: flaivoloka

Today, quilts are made from recycled fabric and leftover scraps from other projects. Also, quilters and fabric artists create items, such as tote bags and grocery totes with recycling and earth symbols.

Another project involves quilters each contributing a square toward an Earth Day quilt. In this case, youngsters in grades 4-7, are entering an Earth Day quilt block into a contest.

Terri Power, at Morning Earth, has a fascinating way to create an Earth Quilt. This isn’t made of fabric, but of actual natural earth materials placed into like containers. Then the containers are assembled into a quilt like pattern, as the youngsters learn about earth and its components.

Norma Bradley, a multi media artist, creates both fabric quilts and earth quilts. Both of these involve nature and natural images. Fascinating!.

Do you have any Earth Day quilting and fabric art projects under way?
