Hey Iowa, Undercover Videos At Factory Farms Should Not Be Illegal

Hey Iowa, Undercover Videos At Factory Farms Should Not Be Illegal

Iowa recently approved a bill that has outraged a lot of animal rights activists. And rightly so. House File 589 just passed in the state’s legislature and has reached the governor’s desk. If signed, the measure would prevent people from photographing or filming a factory farm without the owner’s consent. Essentially, it would ban the undercover work that has previously exposed animal abuse on factory farms. And now, that exposure could be a crime. More »

Blisstree Writers Debate: Is It Possible To Eat Meat Humanely?

Blisstree Writers Debate: Is It Possible To Eat Meat Humanely?

Here at Blisstree, we discuss a lot of news and opinions about eating meat or not eating meat. And because we have some writers who are vegetarians and others who are not, my editor (Briana) and I got into a healthy discussion recently about the ethics and morals behind eating meat. Specifically, we argued whether you can truly eat meat humanely, or if caring about the welfare of animals means never eating meat at all. Take a look at our debate and then let us know where you fall. More »

Meat From Slaughtered Unwanted Horses Is Not Safe

Meat From Slaughtered Unwanted Horses Is Not Safe

Slaughtering horses gets people riled up, as evidenced by the reactions to Congress’ decision to lift the horse slaughter ban in the U.S. While some think it’s inhumane, others—including PETA, surprisingly—think it’s actually better that lame or sick horses be slaughtered in the U.S. (since the alternative is often abandonment or shipping to Mexico or Canada for slaughter, neither of which is an improvement). And many think that while we’re at it, we may as well be economical and process the meat for consumption, too. But even if domestic horse slaughter is humane, eating horse meat isn’t necessarily a good thing. More »

Congress Lifts Horse Slaughter Ban; Says It’s OK To Butcher Them For Meat

Congress Lifts Horse Slaughter Ban; Says It's OK To Butcher Them For Meat

After a 5-year period, Congress has lifted the ban for U.S. inspectors to oversee horse slaughter, which means the doors are now open again for horses to be killed and butchered in the United States. As expected, activists are outraged (as am I), especially considering that slaughterhouses could be up and running in as little as a month. And for what? Greedy ranchers. More »

Yes, There’s Lots of Good In the Paleo Diet; I Still Think It’s Bunk

Yes, There's Lots of Good In the Paleo Diet; I Still Think It's Bunk

A common thread from paleo dieteers seems to be, “But the diet worked for me!” They attest to everything from improved health and weight loss to more energy and better skin. Well—great! There’s a lot to love about the Paleo diet: The emphasis on fresh fruits, nuts and veggies; a commitment to cutting out processed foods, refined sugars and ample carbs. These are the hallmarks of any good diet, and it’s no wonder people following this advice are going to look and feel better. But it’s the overarching narrative and pseudoscience associated with the paleo diet that makes it so hard to take seriously. More »

Why Would Anyone Follow The ‘Paleo Diet’?

Why Would Anyone Follow The 'Paleo Diet'?

When I first started writing for Blisstree a few months ago, my boyfriend suggested I post about the ‘Paleo diet,’ which he had a few friends following. I thanked him for the suggestion, but dismissed it—a couple of weirdos eating bunches of meat did not a trend make. Since then, however, I’ve seen references to the Paleo diet—also called the caveman or Stone Age diet—cropping up in the media more and more. And everyone I’ve talked to seems to know someone on it. Where’s The Beef? Reasons Why We Gave Up Vegetarianism For Good

Where's The Beef? Reasons Why We Gave Up Vegetarianism For Good

We know why many Blisstree readers give up meat and go veg, but after a while of  smooching sprouts, loving leeks, and kissing kiwis, many vegetarians can hear their body’s  crying out for that zesty tang of animal flesh. Some say fish is the “gateway drug” that gets them back to beef, others say they had certifiable conditions that required a meaty solution. Here’s what Blisstree readers had to say about their choice to give up vegetarianism, and beef things up a bit. More »

Holiday Stress Relief Tactic: Look at Your Meat

Holiday Stress Relief Tactic: Look at Your Meat

Evidence from a new study (that makes a terrifying amount of sense once you think about it) suggests that looking at pictures of meat can actually make people feel calmer.

Researchers from McGill University in Montreal split men into groups and showed them pictures of either meat or other items, and then had them evaluate how well another person was reading a speech. When the speech reader made a mistake, the men were asked to alert them by making a sound that was either soft or ear-splitting. The men who looked at meatporn were more likely than the others to have a non-aggressive response to the mistakes. More »

The Secret Life of Beef Video: Your Happy Meal Makes the Environment Sad

The Secret Life of Beef Video: Your Happy Meal Makes the Environment Sad

At Blisstree, we like to think that we know just how tough livestock production is on the environment (we yak about the topic a lot), but this 6:45 video by environmental nonprofit INFORM reaffirms several shocking facts on the subject that are well worth repeating and sharing. Namely, livestock production creates a massively negative effect on the environment (extensive water usage, destruction of trees for pasture, responsible for 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions around the world, etc.). Also, cows are not supposed to eat corn or grain. These make them sick, which is why many of them are shot up with so many antibiotics. (Did you know that 70% of the antibiotics used in the U.S. are for livestock, not humans?) More »
