BodyWorks Classes in Salt Lake City

A new program will begin next week in the Salt Lake Area to “teach girls 9 to 13 how to lead healthier lifestyles and have a better self-image.” The “BodyWorks” classes will be held in David County, and will talk about healthy eating and activities. The girls are encouraged to bring their parents and caretakers to attend the program with them. Any parent who attends will be given a recipe book and food and fitness journals.

The program is aimed at helping young women gain a healthy self-esteem.

Diabetic Superfoods

If you’re diabetic and trying to eat right – and really, who isn’t? – the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has released its list of “superfoods” for all diabetics. They are:
• Beans
• Dark green leafy vegetables
• Citrus fruit
• Sweet potatoes
• Berries
• Tomatoes
• Fish with omega-3 fatty acids
• Whole grains
• Nuts
• Fat-free milk and yogurt

These foods have high “fiber, potassium, healthy fats, magnesium and antioxidants.” And here’s a secret for those non-diabetics out there: these foods are good for you, too! Everyone should try and incorporate more of these into their diet.

I was reminded about that this past weekend. We had some sad family news and then I had the added stress of trying to bake, finish Christmas cards, and deal with an extra work project. In trying to “fit it all in” I found my blood sugars somewhat up and down, despite eating and …read more
