Representative Jim Moran wants erectile dysfunction (ED) ads banned from broadcast radio and TV between 6 am and 10 pm. He’s introduced a bill hoping to do just that. Moran wants the ads declared indecent by the FCC.

The problem here is that kids are asking grown-ups what ED is. If I were a kid, I’d be a bit mystified by those commercials as well.

While I’d certainly like to see far fewer ED ads on TV, I’m wondering about the true motivations behind this bill.

Could it be that some men, who never had to worry about constant maxi pad or yeast infection commercials, are now embarrassed? Are advertisers finally treating the sexes equally by making men squirm too?!? Perhaps they feel what it’s been like to walk in our shoes all these years, putting up with far too many personal ads on TV. Maybe if the bill were introduced by a woman, I wouldn’t be so skeptical.

My other hesitation to see the ads banned is that I’m a big fan of free speech. Is it really fair to allow the incessant cholesterol-lowering drug commercials, but no commercials for ED? I don’t think so. The ads, although very annoying, are discreet enough.

Perhaps the problem of kids asking what erectile dysfunction is can be solved by the advertisers simply not saying that phrase. Come on people. We ALL know what Viagra does.

What do you think about the potential ban on ED ads?

Erectile dysfunction is always a matter of the heart, but new research shows that more than romance is at stake. Two new studies of men with type 2 diabetes found that erectile dysfunction (ED) was a powerful early warning sign for serious heart disease, including heart attack and death.
The good news is that cholesterol-lowering medications could cut the risk of heart problems by about 1/3. Viagra and other drugs alike might offer similar protection.
The study also concluded that most men showed symptoms of ED prior to heart disease and that almost all diabetic men showed ED before coronary heart disease. [...]
Post from: Blisstree

The study also concluded that most men showed symptoms of ED prior to heart disease and that almost all diabetic men showed ED before coronary heart disease. Pretty strong correlation wouldn’t you say?

This type of research will help men with diabetes take hold of their health both mentally and physically.

We know that erectile dysfunction is a manifestation of cardiovascular disease and can predict events such as heart attacks and stroke. Well, researchers decided to take a peek at post menopausal women and the correlation of heart disease and sexual dissatisfaction.
“Our study of sexually active postmenopausal women found dissatisfaction with sexual activity was not predictive of incident cardiovascular disease which may be due to physiological differences in sexual functioning between men and women, or to difficulty measuring sexual dysfunction in women,” added McCall-Hosenfeld.

This is a good thing I suppose. At least the women will feel safe in knowing that their displeasure with sex will not lead to a heart attack. But they will also have to get to the root of their issue, which is sometimes very frustrating.
