What’s a good way to organize?

• By size

My daughter has separated the small beads she uses for her embellishing into containers.  They are organized by color, then by size and design.  She puts these into small clear plastic containers she can see through.  Then she stores the smaller ones into a larger clear plastic box.  Thus they’re easy to find and grab.

I purchased some slightly larger beads.  They came in a clear plastic container with dividers.  Within each compartment, the beads were separated according to color and shape.  So they’re easy to see and grab.  However, I do have to be careful they don’t tip over and the cover comes open!

Some artists with many more beads and buttons and embellishments than Beth and I, organize theirs in several drawers or compartments in a rolling organizer.

In these cases, the fabric may be patched or appliquéd. Or it might be a while cloth piece. These items, then, are heavily decorated with buttons, beads, bows, soda can rings, charms, keys, even small toys until no fabric is visible.

To become recognized in this field, the fabric/fiber artist usually develops a distinctive style or is noted for a particular type of embellishment. She may gravitate toward specific colors, use traditional or original designs, utilize certain types of buttons or beads. As you experiment with embellishing your art, you’ll gradually find your own style.

Frances Holliday Alford is one of the recognized experts in this field and her work is featured in the recent Quilting Arts Embellishments e-mail newsletter.

Creating Heavily Embellished Fabric Art

Here’s a fun way to glam up your scrapbook layout by using stickles!

Stickles: What is it?

Stickles is basically a glitter glue available in a huge range of fabulous colours that is manufactured by Ranger Industries who state that you can “easily write, dot, dash, draw and embellish on paper and rubber stamping projects, candles, memory album covers and more!” The fine point nozzle makes it simple to apply and control where your Stickles will go. If you are interested in adding a little bling to your project, this is a fantastic product.

Where Can I use Stickles?

Almost anywhere! Here are some ideas where you can use Stickles on your next project:

1. Outlining alphas or designs on your pattern paper as shown here (page by Nicole Drewniak)
2. Make flower petals glitzy
3. Dot the centers of flowers
4. Doodle with it!
5. Make fireworks photos glittery!

If you’re a fan of glitters then here’s a trick that Jenny McGuire has written up that you can use for your scrapbook layouts or projects!

I remember making crafts with my mom when I was a kid. We always used glitter! Glitter always seemed to be the perfect finishing tough, didn’t it? Well it seems things are still the same in the scrapbooking world. There are so many wonderful glitter and glittered products available!

In the current issue of Creating Keepsakes, I shared several fun things to do with glitter. Here, I will share some how-to’s along with new ideas. Time to get out your glitter!

When I use glitter on my scrapbook pages, I am always sure to put a finishing coat over the glitter to prevent it from coming off and making a mess in my books. It is really easy! Here I will show you how to cover a punched shape with glitter and give it a finishing coat, as in my layout shown here.

Scrapbook Project: Embellished Paper Bag

I love transparencies. They’re one of my favourite embellishments along with rub-ons and paints!

To create her artistic look, Joey Whittaker scanned in hand drawn shapes, added digital dingbat flowers, and output the results on transparency film. Next, she painted the back of each element with acrylic paint. The opacity really makes the colors pop!� says Joey.
