I mentioned recently that I have a generator for big power outages. However, I hate to haul it out, fire it up and then have the lights come right back on! So, I decided that I needed an additional back up for power outages – a backup power pack that is basically a sealed battery, an inverter and several outlets all in one convenient package.

Photo of Duracell Power Pack Via Amazon.com

Now, this power pack is not a substitute for a generator. It won’t power my furnace or my fridge during a power outage. (Although some of the more powerful packs claim that they can do so for short periods of time.) What it does do is provide power for a small television and a lamp for about four hours. I have a separate battery backup/power surge protector system for the computers and one of them also has the phone plugged into it. Entertainment and light for the kids and a way for me to work for a few hours is really all we need during most power outages.

Next, I’m going to work on a way to recharge the batteries without plugging them in to my wall outlet. I haven’t completely made up my mind, but there does seem to be a pretty good buy at Costco during June – a Coleman 60 watt solar backup power kit for $299.99.

Do you use a battery backup system?

And it’s March 1st! And its Third Step month! Third Tradition Month. What else? Third Concept Month (meaning I’ll have to get you the Second Concept first not third or second 8O).

Let’s see – what thoughts do I have about emergency preparedness for you alkies out there? Consider the newcomer first -

Hmmm – what do I do about going to my first wedding and reception?

Phone numbers! Take your phone numbers! Fill your pocket with quarters! Oh, yeah, we have cell phones today… forgot. If you’re in another town, city, state or out of your ordinary “comfort” zone find the phone number of the hotline before you go to the wedding/reception.

Get your own drinks. Don’t send someone to the bar for a coke for you, get it yourself. My first reception my wife got us our drinks and came back with two rum and cokes. Thankfully, I gave my drink the sniff test and asked her to take a sip first. That’s another thought – ask someone like your spouse to take a sip for you.

Bring your own car – have a way out! Don’t get caught riding with someone else in their car. You might find yourself desperate to leave and not be able to leave.

Go late, leave early.

Call your sponsor in the morning before the wedding. Make arrangements to speak with your sponsor during or after the wedding again. Communicate with your support group.

Develop a support group. Have a sponsor.

Practice using the 500 lb. telephone ahead of time – you know the one, its that one that is waaaaaaaay tooooooo heavy for you to pick up when your life is on the line. Talk to your sponsor or support group with regularity now, before your first wedding arrives.

Other thoughts…

Related to everyday living sober;

“Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answers will come, if your own house is in order.”

Make sure your own house is in order.

“But obviously you cannot transmit something you haven’t got.”

Get it.

“See to it that your relationship with Him is right, and great events will come to pass for you and countless others.”

Maintain your spiritual connection and spiritual health.

“Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us.”

Folks, if you can add others, please do…
