With President Barack Obama now at the helm of the United States, people are wondering just what will happen to the country. After all, it is in an economic crisis at present and the President does need to focus on things that will help the country make its way back to its prime.

One of the things that the new President is doing is looking at alternative energy as a good source of power. Instead of shelling out billions of dollars on how to further improve production of fossil fuel that the country has, he is instead aiming at how to further develop renewable power. And that is where he is putting his money in.

Renewable power does include solar power as well as the energy we all can get from the wind. But that is not all, according to this report I came across earlier, Obama is also looking at biofuels.

In the report I came across today, it was said that Brazil has been looking at going solar and the country has already gone ahead by creating a project on developing alternative energy.

Eddie Austin is the head and the CEO of the mentioned solar company and on this, he said, “We look forward to increasing our project base in Brazil through the development of solar resources for these important facilities. These hospitals expect to significantly reduce their dependence on traditional electric power by generating solar power at their facilities.”

Now with such a project, it seems like Brazil is sure on its way to becoming ‘disconnected’ from the grid and that would be a good thing, don’t you think so?

This is a real good way to teach and promote renewable energy and how to conserve energy. A school which has been granted solar panels or which has been given wind turbines could have kids experience first hand what these alternative energy tools actually do.

Sean Marchetto is the science consultant of the Catholic School District in Calgary. On this, he says, “This is an example of stewardship in action.” And he is right. A lot of students have been able to easily absorb what these solar panels and wind turbines are all about.

Lyndon Rive is the president of SolarCity, a company that is into solar power and solar power technology. On this, Rive said, “This is a gift. We could not ask for a president who’s more focused on energy independence and renewable power.”

On the other hand, there are also those who may be frowning and feeling a wee bit nervous about what is happening and what is about to happen. This is the oil industry.

One of the newest schools to use solar power is the University of Nevada. They had already put in solar panels and these would be lighting up the Joe Crowley Student Union. Officials say that the solar project would be able to create 28 kW for power. In a year, that would be around $5000 savings in electricity. A huge amount, I know.

Thanks to the Black Rock Solar, the solar project became reality. The university did not have that much funds to put in their own solar panels. But with Black Rock Solar entering the scene, the student union now gets to benefit from the free power from the sun.

An Ultracapacitor, sometimes called electric double-layer capacitors or supercapacitors are just just like any other capacitor but have a very high energy density. It can store huge amounts of energy for its size. If you are familiar with the usual electrolytic capacitor, think about a device than can store a thousand times more energy. Most electrolytic capacitors have a value in micro farads, but a typical ultracapacitor has a value in 10, 100, or sometimes thousands of farads.

One may also think of ultracapacitors as a super battery. Normal rechargeable batteries such as Nicd and NiMH have very slow charging times. What’s great about an ultracapacitor is that it charges very quickly just as an ordinary electrolytic capacitor does. It can also discharge high amounts of power very quickly unlike normal batteries.

Such properties of Ultracapacitors made it a very suitable for applications such as for motor startup, and regenerative braking. Someday, I won’t be surprised to see Ultracapacitors replace batteries in all-electric cars (EV) and plugin hybrids.

We have been talking much about solar. Let us now try to shift from that and go with this story from Pennsylvania. See, in Vandergrift, that is where you would find the river Kiskiminetas. And from this river, officials of the area are looking at using this as a good source of electricity. How will they go about with that?

Reserachers have devised a new system that encompasses a grid of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) placed on the bottom of the river, the undulating movement of which will generate electricity. The electrical current generated would pass to substations along the river bank, ultimately charging a group of batteries. The city is looking to harness enough power from the river to cover 20-40% of its needs.

Very nice, right? If areas with bodies of moving water could do the same, the world would probably be greener. And come to think of it, the world is mostly made up of water. So if we all knew how to hone the power from such, just think how we all would be living in a better Earth.
