Bollocks, Kate Middleton. It was a “total shock” when Prince William proposed to you three weeks ago while you were “on holiday” at a quiet safari lodge in Africa? But you’ve been together (on and off) for almost nine years! Are you telling me that in all that time the subject of marriage never came up? (We know it must have, because in your recent ITV News interview with Tom Bradby, Prince William mentioned that lately you and he had been discussing your future and the possibility of marriage.) So why did Prince William alone get to decide when to take one of the biggest steps of your lives? Because he’s royalty and you’re a commoner – albeit a rich one?

Last time I checked, the Queen’s name was Elizabeth, not Victoria. So what’s with the outdated 19th-century traditions? You and Prince William are in your 20s. You already live together. (Sinners!) You say you’re down-to-earth and have good senses of humor, respectively. And yet Prince William orchestrates your marriage proposal as though it’s a scene out of a Jane Austen novel? Prince William and Kate Middleton are finally getting hitched, according to announcements today by the British royal family. Their wedding, which is expected to happen in spring or summer 2011, will be the biggest royal wedding since Charles and Diana’s fairy-tale ceremony in 1981, and is expected to be one of the most widely-watched television events in years. According to officials at Clarence House, the couple, both 28, got engaged last month while on a trip to Kenya, when Prince William gave Middleton his mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

The royal engagement has sparked a wildfire of media reports, and has us contemplating the past and future of their relationship.

The Wedding Ring Thing

I’m a woman and I’m married, but I don’t wear a wedding ring. Never have. When we wed, my husband and I exchanged plain gold bands that had belonged to his maternal grandparents. I liked mine well enough, but it just wasn’t really me. I’ve got nothing against jewelry (I own my humble share), but I simply never saw myself as a wedding ring person.

A few months later, we decided to have the two bands melted down and made into one ring for my husband. I loved this idea. After all, Frank and Catherine were his grandparents, not mine.

My husband’s ring was created for his finger and he wears it all the time. Seems to like it, even. But five years later, I rarely notice the naked fourth finger on my left hand. More »
