If you like to let your tea sit for a few minutes before drinking it, you’re being wise because researchers think they may have found a link between drinking very hot tea and an increased risk for esophageal cancer. Tea that was too hot was defined as tea that was 70 degrees Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit).

The interesting study was published recently the journal BMJ . Researchers looked at a population of people who live in Northern Iran who often drink tea that is very hot and how often they were diagnosed with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), the most common form of esophageal cancer.

According to the press release, Drinking very hot tea can increase the risk of throat cancer ,

They studied tea drinking habits among 300 people diagnosed with OSCC and a matched group of 571 healthy controls from the same area. Nearly all participants drank black tea regularly, with an average volume consumed of over one litre a day.

Compared with drinking warm or lukewarm tea (65°C or less), drinking hot tea (65-69°C) was associated with twice the risk of oesophageal cancer, and drinking very hot tea (70°C or more) was associated with eight-fold increased risk.

Of course, this is one study and more research needs to be done before any definitive links are made, but it is something to consider, especially if you may already have some risk factors for esophageal cancer, such as smoking or drinking large amounts of alcohol.

Carbohydrates. Carbs. It’s like a word from hell for the uber weight-loss buff. Hello?! Atkins diet!

If you do not know a low-carb diet didn’t start as a fad that it turned out to be. It is a desperate diet method for the clinically obese. Especially the ones that need to lose weight in a short period, maybe because so that they will qualify for a lap-band surgery or something.

But lets us not forget that our body needs carbs. It is like an energy fuel. For the diabetic and the obese, too much carbs is bad, especially the refined carbs. But I do love carbs. Although these days, I choose the kinds of carbs I eat. Believe me, I have never done this before. It’s just that my metabolism is not the same today as when I was 15.

Not that my family has a history of obesity or diabetes, but we have a history of cardiovascular conditions and kidney disease. I just wanna live longer, that’s all.

I have always mentioned in my several health blogs that cardiovascular diseases is one endpoint of not eating healthily. However, the most dangerous path that concerns cabs is the high carbs-obesity/metabolic syndrome-cardiovascular event/diabetes event path.

Well as far as I know anyway. Now, a new study has a variation of such path. Yes, it involves cancer!

It has been found that increased carbohydrate intake and obesity is linked to of cases of esophageal cancer.

A new study illustrates what may be a public heath concern as the composition of U.S. diets changes and total carbohydrate and refined carbohydrate intakes increase.

Obesity is a risk factor for many types of cancer, and a diet that includes a high percentage of calories from refined carbohydrates is a common contributor to obesity. Carbohydrates were also unique in that no other studied nutrients were found to correlate with esophageal cancer rates.

The causes of esophageal cancer remain largely unknown. Despite recent advances in treatment, esophageal cancer has a poor prognosis. The five-year rate of survival for esophageal cancer remains below 20 percent and is the eighth-leading cause of cancer related death in American men.

You can read more about it from this report.

Like this veteran congressman (Rep. Tom Lantos) that is now retiring after being diagnosed of esophageal cancer.

Lantos, a California Democrat, is serving his 14th term in the House of Representatives. In a statement released by his office, the 79-year-old lawmaker said routine medical tests showed he has esophageal cancer.

“In view of this development and the treatment it will require, I will not seek re-election,” he said.

These findings have been identified by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center which will be published in the February 27 issue of PLoS Medicine.

For the first time, researchers led by senior author Weibiao Cao (a researcher at Rhode Island Hospital and an assistant professor of medicine and surgery at Brown Medical School) have outlined the signaling pathway from cells damaged by acid, to the progression of esophageal cancer.

The researchers believe that this very same process can possibly happen in the body when cells are exposed to acid reflux.

“The role of acid is controversial. But we show that by exposing cells to acid for short periods of time, that affects a particular enzyme, triggering a chain of events that possibly leads to cancer of the esophagus.

Now that we have a better understanding of the signaling pathway, we can possibly identify who is at risk of developing cancer by determining the levels of this enzyme,” says senior author Weibiao Cao, a researcher at Rhode Island Hospital and an assistant professor of medicine and surgery at Brown Medical School.
