The International Diabetes Federation has introduced a new definition for children and adolescents at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease later in life.

“Almost 4 million deaths every year are a consequence of diabetes-related causes. And with diabetes set to reach 380 million people within a generation, the death toll can only rise.(3) This is the first generation where children may die before their parents.”

Is that scary, or what? As a community, heck a society, we have to set guidelines and enforce education on this as well as have support systems in place for our children to improve their nutrition and exercise regimen. The new definition was printed in The Lancet today…

The new definition is simple and easy to apply in clinical practice. Waist measurement is the main component. Percentiles, rather than absolute values of waist circumference have been used to compensate for variation in child development and ethnic origin.

Early detection, treatment and intervention is key in preventing metabolic syndrome in adolescents. Do you want to read the specifics about this? Check it out!

Here is my personal reflection, or ramblings to be totally truthful, that also serves as a gentle reminder. Get your butt up out of that chair and get moving! Over the last month or so, I haven’t been exercising as much as I usually do. We have been very busy, which I know is NOT an excuse, but that’s all I got!
So my blood sugars were so-so. Nothing to write home about, nor anything I would want to share with a a clinician, if you catch my drift. I was up in the 200’s then down in the 60’s [...]
Post from: Blisstree

Here is my personal reflection, or ramblings to be totally truthful, that also serves as a gentle reminder. Get your butt up out of that chair and get moving! Over the last month or so, I haven’t been exercising as much as I usually do. We have been very busy, which I know is NOT an excuse, but that’s all I got!

So my blood sugars were so-so. Nothing to write home about, nor anything I would want to share with a a clinician, if you catch my drift. I was up in the 200’s then down in the 60’s and in need of sugar. By the way, when you are low, it really sucks!

Anyway, getting back to the whole point of my rant, I have been exercising very regularly over the last week. I have walked at least for 45 minutes every day, at least 3 miles or more at a clip, and swam every night for at least 30 minutes. And for the record, my hubby says that I am the fastest walker on this side of the Mississippi.

My blood sugars have rocked. I am in the low 100’s in the morning. I am no higher than 170’s throughout the day. Imagine that! And why did I get off track with my exercise regimen? Dunno’! And don’t I know better?

I have no good answer for you my friends, but I do know that I am going to kick my own butt into high gear. And to tell you the truth, I have so much more energy and patience. And I feel so much better mentally when I get that physical outlet.

Learn from my stupidity. Get it moving and grooving! You’ll thank yourself.

I am a strong believer in healthy mind, healthy body. Mental health plays into how all of as behave in our personal relationships. As I have mentioned in a previous post, spousal support is important in the treatment of diabetes. It helps when my husband takes the time to understand what type of food is “good” for me and tries to mimic my eating patterns.

Mental health plays into how all of as behave in our personal relationships. As I have mentioned in a previous post, spousal support is important in the treatment of diabetes. It helps when my husband takes the time to understand what type of food is “good” for me and tries to mimic my eating patterns.

I think it would be difficult if my hubby brought home a big ol’ greasy pepperoni pizza, breadsticks and cheesecake 3 times a week. How could any person in their right mind pass that meal up more than once?

A study under way at SUNY Upstate Medical University will examine whether patients with diabetes are better able to manage their chronic illness when their spouses or partners are actively involved in diabetes counseling and education programs.

Will a partner or spouses active role benefit the patient and be effective in the treatment of diabetes?

“For this study we will compare how diabetes outcomes are affected when both spouse or partner and patient are actively engaged in diabetes counseling as compared to working with the patient alone.”

I have a hunch that the results will reflect what I mentioned above. When my husband shows an interest in my health and supports and actively participates in my diet and exercise regimen, I am much more successful.

How do the think the research will pan out? Does it help with your treatment plan when your partner or spouse has an active part?
