Cutting the cord
In line behind “do you know what you’re having?” and “when is the due date?”, one of the most common questions people ask me as an expectant father is whether or not I’m planning on cutting the umbilical cord.
As with the case with many questions in life, people are only asking you so they can then tell you their opinion. This question is no exception and I’ve gotten quite a range opinion on this topic from “that’s so disgusting” to “it’s absolutely beautiful.” I’m expecting my opinion to lay somewhere in between, but I do plan on cutting the cord …read more
Pregnant woman slashes assailant
As an expectant father I am well aware of how volatile a pregnant woman can be. It’s perfectly natural, but you fathers (and some of you mothers) know that expectant moms can be hormonal, angry and often hard to calm down. However, here is substantial proof that you should not mess with a pregnant woman.
A 21 year old pregnant woman in Gilbert, Arizona recently “attacked a suspected purse snatcher with a pocketknife.” A man approached the expectant mother from out of the bushes while she was walking home (alone and way too late) at night. He asked if she had …read more
Pregnant women are great designated drivers
My wife’s baby shower was this weekend, and during the estrogen melee I went out for lunch and a couple beers with an attendee’s husband and a cousin of mine. The other husband, Josh, is also an expectant father and in the course of conversation brought up an infrequently mentioned gem of expectant fatherhood; pregnant women are great designated drivers.
I have posted about this phenomenon before, but it reminded me just how cool this actually is. My cousin was the DD on that day, and I don’t drink often, but it’s nice to be able to have a couple …read more
The Scrubs outlook on pregnancy
Scrubs has got to be one of my favorite TV shows. Syndication now makes it possible for me to watch at least four episodes a night, but my schedule as an expectant father has robbed me of the luxury of time to do so. I rarely watch much more than a half hour of TV to put me to sleep at night, so I will have to relive the magic of this TV series through Wikiquote.
I found this particular quote to be funny even before I was an expectant father.
Dr. Cox: You know, Jordan, I have to tell you — …read more
How to calm a hormonal pregnant woman for under $9
Part of being an expectant father is damage control, putting out the hormonally fueled fires that may crop up at any moment. Pregnancy is an emotional time for everyone, even if you aren’t the one with whom hormones aren’t wreaking havoc.
Seeing as how the father is not the one in the midst of the biochemical tantrum, he should help calm the pregnant mother when she is in melt down mode. As I’ve mentioned before, the mere sight of Oprah will cause a woman to burst into tears. For the most part those types of episodes are usually crocodile tears, but …read more
