It’s a whole different look – not so stark, a great green roof, and almost a pretty rural farmhouse shape. Different from the side view.

This is just a totally great house. The right size, the right colors, lovely landscape, and of course located in Skye. See the interior of this rural project.

This is sort of a late anniversary present. I pretty much stalk Humboldt real estate, hoping I’ll find something perfect enough to motivate me to move back. Yesterday, I found something for Marye instead.

Marye, long time Offbeat supporter and friend, just hit her one year anniversary at Baking Delights. All I can afford to get her is some link love. Although, if money was no object, I’d get her this little ditty in Humboldt county. Ferndale to be specific. Ferndale rocks because the entire town is on the historic registry and it’s beautiful. When I lived in Humboldt, I liked living on the beach best, but I visited Ferndale a lot to scare the poor residents by standing outside and staring at their homes.

This Marye-perfect farmhouse is on the market, and if I won the lottery, I’d buy it for her and then make her move there so I could visit.

It’s a little small for all those kids Mayre’s packing, but still…

She could totally bake out in this kitchen. And no, not Humboldt style bake outs, I mean cakes and stuff.

I know she likes stairs! She has some in her current house.

Look at this – you can almost smell the Lost Coast. So much beauty it makes you ache.

If you’d like to look into this beautiful home, or some other fine Humboldt house, visit Humboldt Land Company.

You should now go visit Marye, read about some cookies and pies, and say, “Happy Anniversary!”

~ By Marye Audet

A few years ago our property and that of 100 or so of our neighbors flooded. Many of the houses that flooded were not in a flood plain but because of a rapid increase in building around us the water run-off was more than the creek could handle and at 2 in the morning I was in flood water up to my armpits in my front yard with sheep and goats in my laundry room, chickens on the front porch, and my husband and I leading horses to the higher ground by the road.

We were very lucky because our house did not flood. It is on a knoll, higher than the rest of the property. The water did come within about 2 inches of coming into the house, though, and the ductwork under the house had to be totally replaced. CNN broadcast from our front yard and it was all very exciting.

Understand, then, my fascination when I read about amphibious houses that are being built by the Dutch.

The houses are normal houses with hollow concrete bases. They are made of lightweight wood and when the floodwaters rise the houses do too! The homes are anchored to 15 ft long moorings with sliding rings, allowing it to float upwards in times of flood. The electrical cables, water and sewage flow through flexible pipes inside the mooring piles.

So I am sitting here wondering how to do this with a 1910 farmhouse. I mean, could you get the barn to do the same thing? A chicken coop? I think that there is a market for these in our neighborhood for sure!
