Dad’s Day, Picnics & Hudson River Memories

Since my father was a farmer, he couldn’t take Father’s day off.  However, he enjoyed taking a picnic lunch, after the milking was done and we were home from church, and going for a Sunday drive with Mother and us  four children.  He had some of his favorite back roads to explore and often would stop where we children could run and play after we ate.
One of Father’s favorite picnic spots was found at the top of a cliff overlooking the Hudson River and the mid-Hudson bridge across the river from Poughkeepsie.  (We lived in a farming town 15 miles …read more

Scrapbooking for Dad

Why not make a scrapbook dedicated to Dad for Father’s Day?  You may not have it made for a gift today, but why not start one?  It can take many forms.

For the dad of young children in the family.

How Do You Celebrate Father’s Day?

How do you celebrate Father’s Day in your family?  Do you have fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other men who have taken a father figure role in your life or your children’s lives?

Do the children make special gifts and cards?
Do you cook favorite foods?
Do you plan special activities for the day?
Do you give Dad the day off to do just as he likes?
Do you take walks with Dad.
Do you go on a family picnic to Dad’s favorite fishing spot?

Are there family rituals that you associate with Father’s Day in your family?

After All, I’m Just like Dad

My sister and her kids took my father out for his 69th birthday last night. I called while they were en route to whatever fabulous restaurant they were going, my father jovial and saying he hopes I can make it there for his “big one” next year. I want to more than he probably realizes. It kills me to be so far away when every other child of his (blood and otherwise) is right there in Memphis with him. This makes me wonder why I moved 350 miles away so many years ago. Was I escaping something?
Perhaps I was. I …read more

Women Get Paternal Clues in Men’s Faces

Women looking for a long-term relationship like men who like children — and they can tell which guys might be interested in becoming fathers just by looking at their faces. Those are among the findings of a study of college students published Wednesday in a British scientific journal.
According to experts evolution has apparently a major impact on a woman’s ability to recognize men who might be interested in the little white house, picket fence, 2.1 kids, the dog and driving a minivan.
It all seems so simple – yet why do women keep going for the badboys?  Are they seeking out those who …read more
