Stitch Wars!

Do you love to make stuff?
Are you a Star Wars fan?
I think I have the perfect blend of both of those interests…
Stitch Wars!

Stitch Wars is an exhibition of iconic characters from the Star Wars series of movies – done in knitting, crochet, felting and more.  The exhibit happens in the 2nd floor gallery, Bear & Bird, above Tate’s in Lauderdale, Florida
“A long stitch ago in a Gallery not so far, far away, an alliance of crafty rebel artists was formed to honor the epic fantasy world of Star Wars. Wielding mighty tools of knitting and crochet, cutting through the great …read more

Upcycling Thrift Store Wool Sweaters

I have a soft spot for thrift and second hand shops – it’s like a treasure hunt!  You’ll never know exactly what you might find…
The team from Threadbanger have come up with a great way to breathe new life into an elderly wool sweater.  Just make sure your sweater is actually wool, because it won’t felt otherwise.
There are so many options for making a felted wool sweat your own – the sky really is the limit.  So have fun, don’t be afraid to be creative and explore your notions cupboard

Trying the Art of Felting via Beryl Taylor

Recently my daughter Beth tried her hand at felting, an interesting fiber art.  She had watched the latest season of Quilting Arts TV and became fascinated by Beryl Taylor’s machine felting.
Beth doesn’t have a felting machine, so she did hers by using hand felters.  Then she added beading and decorative stitching.
For more details about her felting ventures and more photos, including close-ups, visit her Meandering Threads blog.
What have been your experiences with felting?

Exploring the World of Felting in the Realm of Fiber Arts

Quilters and fabric artists have discovered all types of new techniques to produce projects they might never have imagined years ago.  Fiber and fabric art, that has evolved from quiltmaking, offers fascinating options for one’s talents.

Felting is one of these my daughter is exploring.  You can use a felting machine or do it by a handfelter.  At this point Beth is using the hand method, but has created some very interesting items in her explorations.
She has experimented with yarn, recycled wool, roving and cheesecloth.  Her latest projects involve recycled wool sweaters and recycled wool fabric (like from a skirt or jacket).

More Felted Balls

My daughter continues to experiment with the felted balls I mentioned in a previous post.  She made some of various materials today, also of different sizes, even some that resemble tiny beads.  It’s fascinating…all the possibilities with this technique.

(Incidentally, we have a larger than usual Christmas tree this year, but it fits well in our living room with cathedral ceiling and looks lovely.)

Making Felted Christmas Ornaments

Felting has become a very popular procedure in the fabric art world.  The latest items my daughter has tried are Christmas ornaments, round balls made from wool roving.
Check these interesting items out at Beth’s Meandering Threads blog.  There she gives links to tutorials on other blogs.  Right now, the balls she shows on her blog are unadorned, but in lovely colors.  However, you can add all kinds of embellishments on them.
If you’ve tried this technique, let us know what you’ve made.
