A sovereign nation located inside of Rome, Vatican City is the smallest independent city-state in the world, based on both land mass (110 acres) and population (821). It is actually separate from the Holy See of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican Museum includes such world-famous rooms such as The Sistine Chapel with its painted ceiling by Michelangelo, Gregorian Egyptian Museum and the Stanze of Raphael rooms.

Kauai, in the Hawaiian Islands, is the oldest island in the chain. Just over 58,00 people live on the 550 square mile (1400 km2) island.

The island has been the set of many Hollywood movies, including South Pacific,  Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, and Six Days Seven Nights.  Even Elvis Presley filmed Blue Hawaii here.

Completed in 80 AD, the Colosseum is one of the most recognizable structures in the world.

Between the time it was build and the 6th century, it was used for battle reenactments, animal hunts of species collected from across the Roman Empire, as well as other public spectacles and events including public executions and the slaughter of Christians.  But mostly, it hosted gladiatorial contests. 

Some contests or events lasted several months and employed thousands of gladiators. 

The stadium sat 50,000 spectators, including special boxes for dignitaries. _______________________________________________
