Nutrignomics is a nutritional approach that takes your genetic makeup, and hence your predisposition to certain chronic diseases, into consideration. If a meal plan can be designed based on your genetic profile, would you be willing to stick to the plan? A study says that most people are not yet ready to embrace the concept.

Based on these interviews with experts and an extensive literature study, Ronteltap developed different future scenarios to put to the general public. A representative random sample generated a number of conditions that consumers would require before accepting nutrigenomics. The most important is freedom of choice: the guarantee that it would not be compulsory to register a genetic profile. The consumer also believes that the products being developed should provide proven (health) benefits and that their use should not disrupt the routine of daily life. The general public also wants to see clear scientific agreement about the usefulness of the possibilities provided by nutrigenomics.

Personally, I’d be curious to see my genetic profile in the first place and see what kind of meals would match it. Like many others, though, I hope it would not present too many restrictions, and would rather know what foods I can eat to reduce the risks of chronic diseases, rather than getting a list of foods I must avoid.

Health Benefits:

Oatmeal helps keep blood cholesterol levels under control, heading off heart disease. One packet provides one of the three minimum servings of whole grains for kids and adults, as recommended by the food pyramid.

Oatmeal is also fortified with iron, needed to carry oxygen to every cell in your body.

The vitamin C in orange juice enhances the body’s absorption of iron from the oatmeal. Orange juice is also rich in magnesium.

The raisins and orange juice provide two servings from the Fruit Group in the food pyramid.

All nuts supply heart-healthy fat, but almonds also pack magnesium, necessary for normal heart rhythm and muscle function.

1. Excuse: “I don’t have enough time.”

Solution: No matter your lifestyle, mornings are often the most hectic time of the day. But there are easy ways you can squeeze in a nutritious meal every morning.

Shop for healthy breakfast foods like whole grain breads and cereals, low-fat yogurt and orange juice. Having these items on hand makes a morning meal easier to assemble.

In a rush? Bring breakfast in the car and grab a bottle or fill up your favorite insulated to-go cup with 100 percent orange juice for a natural source of vitamins and minerals. Just one serving is more nutrient dense than many commonly consumed fruit juices.

Save time by preparing the evening before. Don’t just pack lunch, pack breakfast as well.

2. Excuse: “I don’t like to eat first thing when I wake up.”

Solution: If you like to hit the snooze a few times every morning, breakfast may be the last thing on your mind. Remember you do not have to eat breakfast within 30 minutes of waking up. A healthy meal fuels the mind and body so just squeeze in a snack before lunchtime. Stock your kitchen or office with healthy, convenient foods and 100 percent orange juice.

3. Excuse: “I can’t spare the calories.”

Solution: Eating more may actually help you weigh less. A study from the University of Nottingham found that women consumed about 100 fewer daily calories when they ate breakfast2. To make breakfast beneficial, choose healthy options that help you increase your servings of vegetables and fruits. For example, just a glass of 100 percent orange juice provides almost 25 percent of the daily USDA recommended serving of fruits and vegetables and is more nutrient dense than many common fruit juices.

4. Excuse: “I don’t like traditional breakfast foods.”

Solution: Pancakes, eggs and bacon not tempting your taste buds or your hectic schedule? Non-traditional breakfasts and even last night’s leftovers like chicken pack the nutrients you need to get your day started right. Or grab a dinner roll from last night and spread it with peanut butter. Getting fuel in the morning is important as research shows eating breakfast every day contributes to increased attention and performance at work and school.

Instead, he suggests that we should follow three simple rules – Eat Food. Not Too Much. Mostly plants. This is the whole premise of his new book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, which is due for publication this month.

Here’s some of his tips on how to find and eat ‘real’ food…

Shop the peripheries of the Supermarket and stay out of the middle – apparently processed food products seem to sit in the middle of most supermarkets and fresh foods sit on the outsides.

Avoid supermarkets wherever possible – head for the farmers’ markets for fresh foods without additives

Wine with dinner is good – a little wine every day, especially with food, is a good bet.

Pay more but eat less – better foods, unfortunately, unfortunately cost more. So the answer is to pay more for a little less.

Eat meals – in other words, don’t eat on the run. Sit at the table, make it family time, create an occasion with every meal.

Know what you’re eating – avoid foods with unpronounceable ingredients, unfamiliar ingredients, more than five ingredients, or have high fructose corn sugar. Remember, you want to eat real food but edible substances.

Listen to your gut – if your gut feels full, simply stop eating. Don’t feel obligate to continue.

Grow your own and cook it too – regain control over your food.

In the previous entry, nutritionist and gourmet vegetarian Joy Pierson shares her insights on vegetarianism. However, no matter how convinced we are on the health benefits of going vegetarian/vegan, it’s often difficult to make the shift. Here are tips from Joy on how to “start exploring healthier food options without giving up the joy in eating”:
1. Don’t be afraid of new foods, such as tempeh, tofu and seitan (wheat meat).
2. Make changes that work for you, so you don’t feel deprived.
3. Make it an adventure, and learn new things along the way.

Sorry for being MIA the last few days. What can I say? I’ve been caught up with the holiday preparations and real life took over. I hope you all had a fabulous time, spending time with the people that matters to you, and that you’ve been eating sensibly the last few days. Nope, I’m not issuing a guilt-trip. Quite the opposite in fact– if you’ve been reading this blog religiously, you know that I’ve always seen food as good.
Enjoy the rest of the holidays, everyone!

Based on the nutritional concepts outlined in the bestselling series of SuperFoodsRx books, which are published by SuperFoods Partners LLC, the Westin SuperFoods menu is not restrictive and is not a diet. Rather, dishes that contain the SuperFoods—fruit, vegetables, grains and proteins which are known to improve well-being and longevity—are marked by the SuperFoodsRx greenleaf logo . The logo signifies that a menu item has been approved by SuperFoodsRx’s team of nutritionists and doctors, and that the selection contains nutritionally significant amounts of one or more of the SuperFoods.

These menus are currently being rolled out in the 25 Westin hotels in the U.S. and Canada, an in 2008 to include those in the Asia Pacific.
