My friend Penny e-mailed to say that her family participated in the annual 4ht of July parade in Chatham, NJ. It warmed up to the 70s for the occasion and she said the humidity was low and the weather was beautiful, and judging by the pictures she sent, her holiday was too. It’s hard to imagine a high in the 70s when we were melting under 90-plus temperatures in sauna-like humidity. But I love a Southern summer day, especially in July.

Last evening, we headed over to my husband’s TV station. He and his co-anchor Janice have been hosting the fireworks show during the 9 o’clock news for the past several years. They broadcast from the roof of the station, which is atop Red Mountain. Two doors down is the might Vulcan statute, where the fireworks are lit.

This is the fourth year we’ve taken Truman and each year he enjoys it more and more. This year he was old enough to idolize Janice’s 9-year-old son, Noah. The two of them had a ball watching the fireworks, playing with the mics after the show, and walking like Frankenstein around the station after the festivities.

It’s a far cry from the first time we took Truman, when he was 2 ½. Back then, he sat through most of the show but demanded I hold my hands over his ears. Toward the end he wanted to go inside, so we walked down to the lobby and sat in a chair next to the entry doors. Truman sat patiently in my lap as the crowed passed out the door just in front of us. Just as I looked up and saw Rick walking down the curved stairway to meet us, Truman’s belly went concave, and he projectile vomited across the lobby, into the path of passersby. Children shouted, “Oh gross,” some gagged. Truman cried, and I sat there with my mouth open, holding a drenched and smelly toddler, not knowing what to do.

Cynthia, who has four children and now works for another station, rushed over and put paper towels down over the brown mess. She said, “It’s OK. Really. It’s OK.” After staring at me as blankly as I did him, Rick carefully picked up our soggy son, carried him to the bathroom and stripped him down to his diaper. We carried him outside as he wailed, “I want my clothes back.” What a pleasant memory.

I’d say our departures from the July 4th fireworks celebration (Thunder on the Mountain) have since been far more tame, but not this year. Truman wandered off with Noah and stumbled, slamming his lips onto the marble countertop in the lobby. Blood gushed, Truman cried, and I calmly carried my little boy to the bathroom, washed off the blood, and surveyed the damage. He busted both the upper and lower lips, but no teeth were lost and no stitches required. He found comfort in sucking a paper towel and drifted off gently on the slow ride home through traffic. And we took comfort in knowing we were finally getting this parenting thing.

I’ll see what photos and memories I can find from my childhood, my daughter’s and the grandchildren. I should begin compiling them into a scrapbook/journal.

When I was growning up, my mother’s family always gathered on July 4th. In later years, as the older generation passed away, my parents established traditions at our home. I shouldn’t let these family heritage memories disappear into the past.

If you have are having a Fourth of July celebration, make a special effort to include friends who may not have anyone else to celebrate with. The summer is finally here and we should all just relax for a day and embrace the happiness that surrounds a social atmosphere.

I think Fourth of July traditions have a lot to do with open-mindedness and everyone coming together to appreciate the country that we share.

Does your dog freak out at fireworks? Our Honey does, but Chip is usually fine after he figures out where the noise is coming from. We’ve several of the techniques below for Honey, including keeping her in her crate with a towel over it and keeping the television on so she’s got other, “regular” noise to distract her.

~ It’s safer to keep your pets at home during Forth of July celebrations instead of bringing him to your neighbor’s party. Keep your pets in the house, rather than in your yard; he’ll be a lot happier indoors, and not tempted to leap over a fence to find you.

~ Dogs can be startled by the loud noise of fireworks. Once the festivities begin, keep your pet in a safe room where he can feel comfortable. If he’s crate trained put him in his crate covered with a blanket to make him feel secure.

~ Block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the television. Play soothing music in the background to counteract the cacophony during the “rockets’ red glare.”

~ If your pet seems overly anxious, spend some time with your pet, speaking soothingly to help them to relax.

~ Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets’ diet can cause stomach upset. In addition, some certain foods like onions, avocado, grapes and raisins can be toxic.

~ Human products can be dangerous to animals. Avoid spraying your pet with insect repellent and only use special sunscreen that is intended for animal use. Keep your pets away from matches and lighter fluid. They can be extremely irritating to the stomach, lungs and central nervous system if ingested.

1 1/2 oz Tequila
Cracked ice
Tonic water
Lime wedge

Pour tequila over the ice in a highball glass. Fill with tonic. Stir and garnish with lime wedge.

4th of July Holiday Punch non-alcoholic
from garvick.com

6 c Orange juice
20 oz Frozen strawberries in syrup
2 c Cranberry juice cocktail
3 c Ginger ale

Blend together the orange juice, strawberries, and cranberry juice cocktail. Add ginger ale immediately before serving drinks. Makes 18 servings.

1 oz Strawberry Liqueur
1 oz Pineapple Juice
1 oz Passion-fruit Juice
1 oz Lemonade

Shake and strain into an old-fashioned glass three-quarters filled with broken ice. Add lemonade, garnish with a sugar-dipped strawberry, and serve.

Red, White and Blue Shooter
from hubpages

1/2 oz grenadine
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz blue curaçao

“The layered effect of this shot will only work if the ingredients are poured in the given order: grenadine, vodka then blue curaçao. Use a spoon to deflect the pouring of the liquor because otherwise the force of each pour will inadvertantly mix all three liquors (and colors!) together.”

In the United States, we’re celebrating Fourth of July, or Independence Day. There are parades, fireworks, community activities, and for many a weekend off from work. You may be involved in a craft or quilting show since come towns often feature such events.
When I was growing up, we couldn’t take a day off from the dairy farm. However, we usually visited relatives for a holiday meal, a family reunion type of gathering, then returned home for the evening chores. Then as dusk descended, we watched fireworks from the “Big Hill,” a hay field on a hill top from which we [...]
Post from: Blisstree
