Yes, really! Korean scientists have cloned the world’s first red fluorescent cat.
A cat, right, possessing red fluorescence protein (RFP) glows in the dark when exposed to ultraviolet light while a normal cat doesn’t. A team led by Kong Il-keun, an animal cloning expert at Gyeongsang National University, said on Dec. 12 it had cloned the two RFP cats for the first time in the world.
The scientists modified the skin cells of the mother cat by using a virus to make the protein fluoresce and believe the procedure could help develop treatments for human genetic diseases.

This is almost too weird to be true, but apparently it is! GloFish are genetically modified fluorescent fish and are available in three colors: Starfire Red, Electric Green, and Sunburst Orange.
But what are they?
GloFish fluorescent zebra fish were originally bred to help detect environmental pollutants. By adding a natural fluorescence gene to the fish, scientists hope to one day quickly and easily determine when our waterways are contaminated. The first step in developing these pollution detecting fish was to create fish that would be fluorescent all the time. It was only recently that scientists realized the public’s interest in …read more
