When Disaster Strikes, Go Solar

This is what the residents of Oklahoma have learned in the past years. See, they have been ravaged by the wrath of nature which came in the form of ice storms and tornadoes. But there were more of the former than the latter and that has caused quite a lot of damage to their daily lives.

With that, more and more residents of this state are looking at transferring to solar power so as to be able to live comfortable lives despite the destructions that nature can bring. See, if power lines are cut, they can still live comfortably with the help of the sun’s rays.

John Miggins is an employee of the Standard Renewable Energy, which is a company in Oklahoma. He said, “We are seeing a lot more people turning to solar homes because of the ice storms.”

I personally would, too. But do we all have to go solar just when we had learned our lesson already? Do we really have to wait for that to happen?

Green Resolutions For The New Year

It is the first day of the New Year and this is the time of the year when people would take out pens and paper and would start jotting down things that they would like to change or achieve in the year. Now you have probably done that since you were a kid and you may have been (or not been able to) successfully follow your list. But that may be because the list was all about you.

Now, what the Florida Department of Environmental Protection says is that they are hoping that people would start doing New Year’s Resolutions that were green. After all, we all are living in this world and we do need to adopt green lifestyles. Maybe if we all did have green resolutions, we just may be able to stick with it through the whole year.

You may already have your resolutions list with you but if you would like, you can check out the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s site to get a good idea on the green resolutions that they’ve got to offer.

Christmas is now over and it is perhaps time now to start cleaning up our homes of all the glitter and the lights that come with Christmas. Some may have started cleaning already and some may just be waiting for the New Year to come before they start on that task.

Now one of the biggest things that a person has got to deal with when it comes to Christmas decorations is the Christmas tree. Because it is something that needs to be disposed, just how to dispose of it is the problem. All those other Christmas decors can be kept in a box and stored until next year. It is only the tree that has to go.

Anyway, I do suggest that you can go through the Internet and find out places near your area where you can dispose of your trees. There are drop off locations around the country and these are sponsored by companies who would like to help recycle the trees and make them into something else.

Did you know that in the United States alone, there is 25% more trash during the Christmas season? Yes. That is technically between Thanksgiving and the color New Year’s Day. That may look like much to you but it is the truth.

With that in mind, what should you actually do? There are things that you can focus on and one is reducing or recycling stuff. Leah Ingram is one of those who have decided that going green is still applicable despite the holidays. She says, “I’m trying to reduce what I’m throwing out, I am recycling, I am reusing. One of the things that we did last year was to use re-usable bags to wrap the gifts.”

What can be recycle and what can you reuse? There are lots of materials going around during Christmas and if you really take a good look at them, you can actually see what else you can do with them.

Not literally, mind you. I am talking about how you can wrap your gifts to your loved ones this Christmas so much so that you do not help add to the large amount of waste in the trash. There are ways and you should start choosing which one to use for yourself because in just a few days, Christmas is gonna be here.

One of the best things that you can do is by using gift wrap that is made from recycled paper. You can check that out before you actually purchase the item. See if it has the recycle logo in it. That is a way of going green.

Another tip that you can use is by re-using all those Christmas gift wrap that you have saved last year. I mean, those gift wrap sure are all still in good condition. If the paper is too crumpled, you can try to fix it up by running a hot iron over it.

So you may have decided to dispose of that Dell product that you have had for ages (or so you think) because you have the newest one available and there is no place for the old product. Before, you may thinking just how do you dispose of that computer product. Well, now, Dell has a solution.

Partnering with Staples, Dell has now made it possible for any Dell product owner to recycle whatever Dell computer gadget they have for free. All they need to do is bring that item to any Staples branch across the country. That would not be difficult to do. After all, Staples has around 1500 stores across the country.

When huge companies like Dell and Staples do things like this, just imagine the effect that it would have on the environment. This essentially means less trash and less toxic waste.

Way to go Dell and Staples! And I wish you well in this endeavor.

Election’s Over. Now We Recycle.

After all the excitement (and disappointments) over the elections, John McCain concedes. Barack Obama emerges as the victor. Many have found hope over what has happened. We all may be looking at the future but how about the present? There are tons of election paraphernalia around. What do we do with them?

Good thing there’s BRING Recycling. If you have those plastic signs which are rigid around, you can take them and bring them to the facility which can be found in Glenwood. You should know though that this facility only recycles the rigid plastic. Anything other than that, you would have to take them out.

Julie Daniel is the director of the recycling facility and she says, “We’d like to see every campaign sign in Lane County reused or recycled. There are thousands of them out there and that adds up to a lot of resources potentially going to waste.”

This is the Gatsby Hollywood and it is a community which you can find in Los Angeles. In recent reports, this community has claimed that it is the very first urban community in Los Angeles that is going to get power from the sun and would be all green.If you are going to take a walk around the place, you would notice that this whole area of Gatsby Hollywood is new and those who would be taking residence here would have the option of choosing technologies that would get power from the sun. This community has been designed for single families.

In this community, you would not fear about having the wrong solar technologies or anything illegal. See, Gatsby Hollywood has already been given the go sign and is now a Certified California Green Builder. There are 34 homes here and it is said that one who would be living here would be saving around 60% in bills per month.
