Guatemala Birth Mother Interview Deadline
The CNA has announced that the birth mother interview process will end on August 31. All interviews must be completed by that date or the case will be turned over for review.
Please see the CNA website or Guatadopt for more information.
Birth Mother Interviews Scheduled in Guatemala
First, let me explain that much of this is speculation. However, Guatadopt.com does have the most up to date information on what is really going on in Guatemala. Please read their key points regarding PGN.
My “unofficial sources” (meaning list serves and other adoptive parents) are telling me that Birth Mother and Foster Mother interviews have already been scheduled and will be conducted according to entry date into PGN.
Guatemala in Trouble Too?
With all of the Vietnam issues and the previous Guatemala issues (okay, the current, ongoing, and just plain old disheartening issues) I am gettin’ a little bummed.
The new Attorney General Baudilio Protillo Merlos took over on April 24, 2008. The new Sub Attorney General is Flory de De Leon. Apparently de De Leon is holding off making any critical Constitutional Court rules and Merlos has requested an audit of in process cases.
I17IH Fingerprint Expirations
Guatadopt has reminded me that for ALL international adoptions the US Embassy requires a current I171H and fingerprints.
I171H expires after 18 months and fingerprints expire after 15 months. Agencies do not always remind you that your paperwork has expired so make sure to check your own.
99.9 Percent, a DNA Match, and a Bittersweet Triad
This morning we awoke to an email from our social worker stating that she had our DNA match in hand, exactly one week from when the birth mother and The Bebe took the DNA test.
The attorney presents all documents, photos, and medical test results to the US Embassy.
Guatemala Adoption: Dateline Recap
In Follow-up to When Adoptions Go Wrong: Dateline Exclusive
Like Lisa at Adopting from Guatemala, I was also pleasantly surprised by the piece Dateline NBC aired last week on Guatemalan adoptions. They did not focus on the rumors of baby snatchers or birth mothers selling their babies, baby farms, or extortion. Rather, they focused in on one story and one attorney; Thanasis, who is supposed to be banned from performing adoptions in Guatemala. Good idea, Dateline. In my opinion, if they had gone that route, they would have tainted Guatemalan adoptions for a long, long, time.
When Adoptions Go Wrong: Dateline Exclusive
It is NO secret that Guatemalan adoptions have been under scrutiny for years because of alleged illegal practices. What Dateline has supposedly uncovered is unreal; three children kidnapped from the same family and attempted to be sold off into adoption. Two of the children have since been returned to the parents and one, the eldest daughter, is still missing. Dateline will air an exclusive on Guatemalan adoptions tonight (January 20).
Central Authority Announced!
From Guatadopt:
Central Authority Announced!
Today, PGN published information about the new Central Authority.
It is located at
32nd street
9-34 zone 11
Colonia Las Charcas, Guatemala City.
At this time it is not sure what Central Authority will be doing or when it will be enforced but RUMORS are that new adoptions cases (those started after December 31, 2007) will start being processed there in April.
Guatemala Adoption Woes
On Friday Guatemala’s PGN * shut down stating that they would not be accepting any new cases other than those that had been approved. According to Guatadopt.com this is VERY CONFUSING information because it was believed that ALL cases would be GRANDFATHERED in if they were submitted before December 31, thus APPROVED and processed.
What is even more confusing is that the sign on the door to PGN stated that all cases have to be registered with CENTRAL AUTHORITY, a NEW division.
