Ok, So Maybe Gwyneth’s Low-Carb, Low-Sugar Diet Isn’t That Bad…

Ok, So Maybe Gwyneth's Low-Carb, Low-Sugar Diet Isn't That Bad...

So, last week, I wrote about purveyor-of-goop Gwyneth Paltrow’s new low-carb, low-sugar cookbook (and how when her family eats that type of cooking, they feel hungry, which seems like a weird thing to admit in a cookbook). I’m not a huge fan of Gwynnie, so I ripped on her pretty hard. Today, I read a new interview from SELF that gives a bit more insight into how she approaches her diet. And I have to say, I feel a little bad about picking her apart so harshly.

Gwyneth Paltrow And Tracy Anderson Worry That Your Exercise Is Making You Fat

Gwyneth Paltrow And Tracy Anderson Worry That Your Exercise Is Making You Fat

Gwyneth Paltrow‘s GOOP newsletter usually causes the most outrage when it’s chock full of expensive product suggestions or advice on work-life balance from women who can afford personal chefs. But I have even more to say about today’s topic: “Is Your Workout Making You Fat?” The letter is a plug for Gwyneth’s personal trainer, Tracy Anderson; an “expert” whose advice on weight loss for moms and exercise to transform your body type tends is fairly infamous for being body negative and, in many cases, lacks any basis in science. The advice that she’s spouting via Gwyneth suffers both pitfalls. More »

Stress-Free Holiday Entertaining With Goop: Ceramic Fortune Cookie, Anyone?

“In order to avoid stress we girls at goop have put together a plan to make entertaining fun and stress-free,” writes Gwyneth Paltrow in the latest issue of her vanity publication. How sweet. And what might Gwynnie & the goop gang advise for less stressed holiday entertaining? Oh, just your run of the mill advice on bespoke stationary dinner menus and buying your ceramic fortune cookies in advance. More »

Gwyneth Paltrow Wants To Sell You A $75 One-Shouldered Yoga Top

Do y’all get GOOP, Gwyneth Paltrow’s much-maligned weekly lifestyle letter? GOOP is basically the laughingstock of the internet, frequently skewered and satirized because of its tone-deaf content and dizzying disregard for anyone who doesn’t live the kind of uberprivileged life that Gwynnie leads. This week, Gwyneth is letting us in on some of her ridiculously impractical and expensive suggestions for the holiday season. More »

Gwyneth Paltrow Swears She Wrote Her Own Cookbook, But Many Celebrity Chefs Don’t

Gwyneth Paltrow Swears She Wrote Her Own Cookbook, But Many Celebrity Chefs Don't

Gwyneth Paltrow insisted on Twitter that she wrote “every word” of her 2011 cookbook, My Father’s Daughter, without the help of a ghostwriter. A New York Times article last week said Gwyneth—along with many other celebrities, chefs and celebrity chefs —don’t write their own cookbooks or even develop and taste all the recipes included. Gwyneth Paltrow Wants You To Buy Her $425 Cleanse; You Can Do It For Less

Gwyneth Paltrow Wants You To Buy Her $425 Cleanse; You Can Do It For Less

Post-New Year’s, ’tis the season for feeling really yucky about yourself for your holiday indulgences. Or, at least, ’tis the season for people telling you that you feel gross–like Gwyneth Paltrow in this week’s goop newsletter, which, like every year at this time, encourages readers to try (read: buy) her favorite cleanse, concocted by her favorite physician, Dr. Alejandro Junger. Called Clean, the cleanse is made up of smoothies and supplements…and costs $425. But here’s the cool thing about getting your body back on track: it’s really, really inexpensive to do. Here are a few better ways to put that money to use–while still getting that good, clean feeling. More »

Doctor Slams Gwyneth Paltrow’s Faulty Hangover Cure

Doctor Slams Gwyneth Paltrow's Faulty Hangover Cure

Plenty of celebrities have dispensed bad health advice (see: Gisele Bunchen‘s claims that SPF is toxic), but Gwyneth Paltrow works hard to establish herself as one of the most outspoken, least qualified Hollywood health experts. She regularly cites alternative therapies, diets and even exercise regimens in her GOOP newsletter, but her latest hangover prevention tips have at least one doctor up in arms. Dr. Michael Lucchesi says that the “Mercy elixir” she promoted in her latest newsletter is no better than water or gatorade; her other tips are equally ridiculous. More »

7 Ways To Incorporate Exercise Into Your Week When You Work 100 Hours

7 Ways To Incorporate Exercise Into Your Week When You Work 100 Hours

This is a post from our sister site, TheGrindstone.

Julia Novy-Hidesly, the executive director of the non-profit Lemelson Foundation, said this in the book The Go-Getter Girl’s Guide by Debra Shigley. We are all working more. According to a new survey of more than 300 companies in the U.S. and Canada, nearly two-thirds (65%) of respondents expect their employees to work more hours now than they did prior to the recession and see this trend continuing for some time. But it is not like we can work less hours in a day if we want to stay at the top of the game.

However, one of the best ways to deal with stress and the added workload is exercise. According to research from the University of Bristol, people who exercise on work days are more productive, happier and suffer less stress than on non-gym days: 72% reported improvements in time management on exercise days compared to non-exercise days, 79% said mental and interpersonal performance was better on days they exercised and 74% said they managed their workload better. You can’t work less but you can figure out how to incorporate more exercise into your life. Here are a few tips from some experts to incorporate working out into your busy life so you can be better at your job.

Auf Wiedersehen, Oprah; Hello Heidi Klum on AOL

Auf Wiedersehen, Oprah; Hello Heidi Klum on AOL

Today was Oprah‘s last, last goodbye, and while retailers (and retail therapists) are bemoaning the loss, Heidi Klum is swooping in for the kill. The model and TV personality just launched a new lifestyle site for AOL, called Heidi Klum. Following in Gwyneth Paltrow‘s GOOP-y footsteps, Klum’s site will cover everything from parenting and relationships to fitness, lifestyle, fashion, and beauty, but for now, it’s pretty much just fashion and beauty (everything else is “coming soon..”). Heidi’s had her humorous moments on Project Runway, her bubbly personality is charming, and she’s definitely got that whole fashionable bombshell thing going on, but we can’t help but feel a little blah about getting more celebrity advice. Skinny Girls and Spaghetti: The Ins and Outs of Weight Loss With Carbs

Skinny Girls and Spaghetti: The Ins and Outs of Weight Loss With Carbs

Gwyneth Paltrow’s been cooking up a lot of spaghetti to promote her new cookbook, My Father’s Daughter, but we’re skeptical that she can stay so skinny while noshing on all those carbs. There are endless diets that demand we steer clear of carbs if we want to lose weight, but our inner bread lover is always looking for a diet plan that allows us just the occasional Italian meal. To find out if it’s really possible for skinny girls to eat spaghetti, we consulted Dr. Natasha Turner, author of The Hormone Diet, to find out whether carbs could really be a part of our healthy weight loss plan. The verdict? It depends on your metabolism. More »
