While the outer borough is generally at the forefront of all-things-hip, Brooklyn has been slow to adopt workout trends (too much artisan bacon and craft beer?), and fitness offerings have generally been limited to yoga and Pilates. It looks like that’s about to change. More
Many gym-goers are easily distracted or annoyed at fellow exercisers (let’s face it, extreme body odor and sweaty machines are just nasty). But according to a new survey that asked people about the grosses sights, sounds and smells at the gym, things can get a whole lost nastier. More
It’s no secret that barefoot running is having a serious moment right now. Those Vibram five-toed boots have become nearly as ubiquitous as yoga pants, and every major shoe manufacturer has rolled out some barefoot (or at least minimalist) shoe. A lot of people also run fully barefooted–including one guy at my gym the other day. Which is where I draw the line. More
A few days ago, I was doing a little mat work in the open space at my gym when I was assaulted with a mouthful of Simple Green. I looked up to find a man spraying down his own mat directly over my face. And while I applaud him for actually using the disinfectant, the cavalier crop-dusting of cleaners is something that is not rare, and not good. More
When a D.C.-area gym found itself plagued by a locker room thief, the manager decided to do something about it. According to NBC, Chris Kopp decided to fill one of the lockers with flour and put a flimsy lock on it–and sure enough, the thief got a face full of white powder. The thief escaped quickly, but his face was already on the security cameras, and he’d checked in at the front desk. Which is a great way to catch someone, and it’s a funny story but…I want to back up and discuss that whole “cameras in the locker-room” thing. Is that something you’re OK with? More
Depending on where in the country you live, summer is either just around the corner…or it’s already in your driveway, parked, and standing on your doorstep. Wherever you are, when the sun comes out, you can rest assured that you’ll … More
Between ad campaigns shot by Terry Richardson and their “sexy” yoga video that pissed off yogis the world over, we thought Equinox had a monopoly on tacky, sexist gym ads. But it appears that Brazil’s Vila Olimpica has broken into the market, one weird, sexist, creepy ad at a time. Well played, Brazil. Well played. More
I’ll admit it: I love trying different kinds of exercise. But because working out can get expensive ($15 for a drop-in class? Yikes), I really appreciate when gyms and studios are willing do run a Groupon or similar daily deal, because it means that I can save money while I dip my toe into whatever trendy kind of barre or dance or weight workout that everyone else is doing, and then go back and pay full price if I loved it. But I’ve also been a regular member of a gym for a long time, and from that perspective, there’s kind of nothing worse than the flux of folks who come flooding in after a daily deal. But I promise: you can do it. More

8 Things You Shouldn't Do Before Bed
If you were to believe the headlines on the average, body-shaming women’s magazine, you might think that working out is only good for two things: weight loss, and getting men to love you. But, just like you as a multi-faceted, sentient, intelligent human being, a work out is about a lot more than just looking hot and being skinny (as if those things are mutually exclusive). Regular exercise can improve your skin, your heart, your mood, and even your career. More
There’s been a lot of buzz this year about Gym-Pact, the app that charges you money when you skip out on the gym, and gives you money when you do go. It’s been featured on Reuters, the Huffington Post, the New York Times, and just about every morning radio talk show. And while this level of motivation may be what some people need to get their workouts in, doesn’t paying someone else for your non-workout days seem more than a little silly? Isn’t that why you pay for a gym membership, anyway? More
If you thought the shit yogis say was funny, check out “$hit Women Say To Personal Trainers,” from BJ Gaddour. (He’s the CEO of StreamFIT.com, so he should know.) Our favorite? “I feel like this is making us bulkier”—we hear it and we’re not even your personal trainers. More
If you’ve already decided to kick your bad gym habits this year, three cheers for you! But even when you’re not, say, painting your nails and talking on the phone while leisurely spinning on a stationary bike, you may be committing tiny fitness infractions that, while they won’t bother anyone else, might be making your workout less effective. But there’s good news–you can instantly improve your workout, just by correcting these super-common, very minor  errors. In a perfect world, where there were 36 hours in a day and you always had plenty of time to do everything you wanted, you’d be diligently dedicated to your fitness regimen. Unfortunately, the world is far from perfect, and you frequently have to skip your workout for one reason or another, which isn’t a great feeling.  But days like those don’t have to be entirely sedentary–if you can carve out a little bit of time at lunch or after work, there’s a whole world of personal trainers and yogis, just waiting for you…on YouTube.
