Flu Masks for Dogs

With the news last week of an Iowa cat that contracted the H1N1 flu virus, pet owners in China are becoming a little more fastidious with their pet care: they’re dressing their dogs up in jackets and masks donated by the FBI!

Though there have been no reported cases of canines catching the H1N1 virus, the extra precautions do decrease the airborne risks of catching any illnesses, and they also prevent the dogs from contact exposure with other dogs which can help keep them from catching the canine flu, or H3N8.
I know neither of my two dogs would stand for this, …read more

Iowa Cat Tests Positive for H1N1

Up until today it was thought household pets couldn’t catch the H1N1 virus (also known as swine flu), but an Iowa cat has just proved earlier assumptions wrong!

The 13-year-old indoor house cat, who has fully recovered from the illness, reportedly caught the virus from one of two human household members who were sick with H1N1. It isn’t believed that the cat has passed the virus on to anyone — or anything! — else. An IDPH Public Health veterinarian says it’s actually not that unexpected, and that other flu strains have been found in cats before.
Up until today the H1N1 virus …read more

Swine Flu Vaccines: Will Your Child Get it?

The Swine Flu, aka H1N1, has been definitely leaving a mark in history and finally it seems that someone is going to try to stop it. Cities around the country will be having access to the vaccine this Friday, many schools will even offer it right inside the nurse’s office.
My question is will your son or daughter get the swine flu shot? If you did not plan on getting the shot will you allow the school to administer the shot to your child? Why or why not?
Fox News Reports:
Some believe the vaccine was rushed and not adequately tested. Others just …read more

WHO Says Don’t Let Down Guard Against H1N1

The World Health Organization (WHO) said today that we shouldn’t allow ourselves to gain a false sense of security from the current mild outbreak of H1N1. WHO cautions that the worst may be yet to come.

Well, no one wants to hear that just when fears seem to be subsiding, but perhaps it’s smart to listen. And keep up with the good hand washing!
WHO says that around 7,520 people in 34 different countries have been infected with the flu strain so far. However, WHO isn’t recommending travel restrictions because of the virus.
For advice from WHO on protecting yourself, visit their guidance …read more

12-Year-Old Blamed for the Swine Flu

Phoebe Wyburd is only 12 years old but already has a ton of enemies and it is all over something she had no control over. She came down with the ….. swine flu, errr H1N1 disease as did a few other of her classmates in London.
Normally when a child gets sick and stays home that’s it, but that was not the case for this little girl. The classmates found out and realized she had it and she soon got text messages telling her they hated her, she’d die and a bunch of other things. They didn’t stop there though she …read more

Surgical Masks and H1N1

Surgical masks are in big demand right now with the H1N1 outbreak (referred to as swine flu). But the masks are far more effective if worn by the sick person.
Surgical masks are useful for preventing spread, but won’t necessarily keep you from getting sick.
The CDC recommends frequent hand washing among other safety precautions. Wearing masks in the US hasn’t been recommended by the CDC, but the choice is yours. Just keep in mind that masks may spread fear. CNN took on the mask question recently with Masks keep you from spreading illness.
According to the World Health Organization, there are currently …read more
