What Burns Me Up

I am cleaning my house today….giving everything a real good clean – before the repair people come in a day or two. I have been going through everything, and throwing things out. I just found 3 phone books from 2007 (city directory and yellow pages x 2) and on each one, they have glued coupons for complimentary consultations for hair restoration surgery.
First of all, not everyone has a problem with their baldness. Promotions like this are designed to make us feel bad about the amount of hair we have (or don’t have) on our heads. I …read more

I Would Rather Be Bald Than….

I Would Rather Be Bald Than….

I would rather be bald than have to maintain (not to mention carry around) all of this hair.  The women in this picture, are the famed Sutherland Sisters.  The “Seven Wonder Sisters” climbed to great-ish amounts of fame in the late 1800’s when they were singers with the Barnum and Bailey circus.
I really hope their stylist was paid a fortune. If you want to know more about these sisters (including stats about their hair) go here via neatorama (and picture source).
By the way, these women were involved in the making and selling  (perhaps only selling) of a hair tonic.

The Straight Dope on Baldness Remedies

Here’s an overview of the treatment options for hair loss presented with flair by Cecil Adams. All you need to see to know he’s got a sense of humor is a summary list of the four available treatments:

Castration.
Minoxidil.
Finasteride.
Hair transplants, etc.

Anyone who even puts castration in the list of potential remedies has… well… balls.

Bald Blogs #3: Hair Transplant Blog

One of my regular Bald reads is the Hair Transplant Blog by Dr. Robert Bernstein. The Hair Transplant Blog is a semi-regular set of Q & A posts from the doctor. For example, the most recent in on stress induced hair loss vs. genetic hair loss.
Now, this may surprise a few of you who have been with me for a while, since I’m not what you’d call an advocate for hair restoration. Most bald men (and women) just need to accept it and move on. Of course, I’m also not the kind of person who lays down many absolutes. There …read more

He’s Got Hair!

Seth, featured in Bald Blogs #2, has big news.
OK, it’s official – hair is starting to grow on my head. I feel this way because yesterday my girlfriend looked at my scalp and said “Yup – hair is starting to grow on your head!”

Hair Restoration Adverts Might Be Coming to Canada

They will if some lobbyists have their way. From this National Post article, comes news of the debate surrounding proposed changes to Canada’s Food and Drug Act.
At the centre of the debate sits that strange list of diseases known as Schedule A. It was first compiled by Parliament in 1908 as part of the Proprietary or Patent Medicine Act, in an effort to stop snake-oil salesmen from peddling “cures” for certain diseases to a gullible public.
In 1934, Schedule A was added to the Food and Drugs Act for the same reason. It has been changed slightly in the years since, …read more

Curis Reaches Milestone in Hair Program

I found this AP story at Business Week Online about the progress of a new topical treatment:
Shares of Curis Inc., a developer of nerve regeneration drugs, climbed Tuesday after the company reached the first preclinical milestone in a hair growth program with Procter & Gamble Co.’s pharmaceutical unit.
For that, Curis will receive $1 million from the household products company, according to company spokeswoman Megan Burns. If the company reaches the second preclinical milestone, P&G will pay Curis up to an additional $1.8 million, she said.
The big guys all want you to regrow your hair. How about checking out a little …read more
