Boobs vs. Baldness

Image details: The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner served by picapp.com
Did you know that for every hair transplant being performed in the United States, there are 5 breast augmentation surgeries being performed.
Now I know a lot of men, from all walks of life. White collar professionals, blue collar workers, students, bald headed, hairy…you name a group, and I know someone in it. I asked all of the men that I know, if they would encourage their wife or girlfriend to have breast augmentation surgery…..75% of the men asked, said no – not even if it would make their …read more

Baldness Detection Critical to Successful Transplant Surgery

That’s the argument put forth by Drs. Bernstein and Rassman of Bernstein Medical in the latest issue of the journal Hair Transplant Forum. The journal is published by The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), and the lead article this time around is “Densitometry and Video-microscopy.”
In the article the doctors argue that a close, clinical examination of a patients scalp has many benefits:

Better identification of good surgery candidates
Better forecasting of future hair loss patterns
Better understanding of the patients hair characteristics
Better planning of donor and recipient areas

This should be a no-brainer if you are considering hair transplant surgery. Make sure …read more

Body Hair Transplants?

So I see this news item about the DermHair Clinic that touts a “new technique” for dealing with hair loss. I almost skip over it, because I’m getting a bit numb to the miracle breakthroughs designed to part individuals from their money with ever increasing creativity. (The cynicism isn’t new, it’s always been there.) But something about this one catches my eye. Right there in the opening paragraph:
…a unique hair-restoration procedure called “Body Hair Transplantation” (BHT) where body hair is transplanted to balding areas on the head.
You read that right: body hair. Of course the first thing I do is …read more

Bald Blog #4: Hair Loss Information

Hair Transplant Physicians are invading the Blog-o-sphere! Hair Loss Information is written by Dr. William R. Rassman and Dr. Jae P. Pak, two LA-based physicians. They use a similar approach to Dr. Bernstein at Hair Transplant Blog, Q & A, though they seem to embrace a slightly broader range of topics just as the availability of generic finasteride at Costco.

Bald Blogs #3: Hair Transplant Blog

One of my regular Bald reads is the Hair Transplant Blog by Dr. Robert Bernstein. The Hair Transplant Blog is a semi-regular set of Q & A posts from the doctor. For example, the most recent in on stress induced hair loss vs. genetic hair loss.
Now, this may surprise a few of you who have been with me for a while, since I’m not what you’d call an advocate for hair restoration. Most bald men (and women) just need to accept it and move on. Of course, I’m also not the kind of person who lays down many absolutes. There …read more

New Link: Hair Transplant Blog

I’ve added a new link to the sidebar: The Bernstein Medical Hair Transplant Blog. The blog is run by Dr. Robert Bernstein, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Columbia University in New York. Bernstein posts in an easy to understand Q & A style covering hair transplants from A to Z.
Here’s the best recommendation I can make: I have no interest whatsoever in a hair transplant… and I’m a subscriber to his blog.

Hair Transplant History

Hair Transplant History

Dr. Robert Bernstein has a piece on his blog today, about the history of Hair Transplants.
Over the years the grafts have gotten smaller and smaller. So where in the ‘60s and ‘70s they were the size of pencil erasers, they gradually decreased in size until doctors were performing hair transplants using just a few hairs at a time. The major breakthrough came in the mid 1990s when we realized that hair doesn’t grow individually but grows in little tiny groups and these groups are called follicular units.
Makes sense why those stray hairs on my chest or shoulder always come in …read more
