Hanging out.
What happened to romance? Spontaneity? There’s nothing spontaneous about hanging out. It just is…and that can get a little bit tiring after a while.

After being together for a certain period of time, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. Weeks and weeks went by before I realized that every weekend we were just…hanging out. On the couch, in a restaurant, at the movies.

Hanging out.

Image: stock.xchng

What happened to romance? Spontaneity? There’s nothing spontaneous about hanging out. It just is…and that can get a little bit tiring after a while.

Naturally it took me a few weeks to bottle up my frustration before finally exploding in the middle of a Friends rerun. “What are we doing? This isn’t fun? Is this all we’re ever going to do anymore? Don’t you want to do something?” Paul looked at me with a mix of confusion and careful uh-oh she’s in one of those moods, tread carefully in his eyes.

“But I like hanging out with you.”

Sigh…how can you get mad at someone when they say something like that?

My anger subsided and I started to put together coherent sentences that formed into a constructive conversation about our relationship and the rut that we had fallen into. From there we came up with a few ideas for what we could do the next day and the following weekend to break out of the ‘hanging out’ routine.

Are you reading this from the couch? Is your husband next to you? Is Friends on?

Don’t be afraid to say what you feel – he might surprise you with the ideas he comes up with that doesn’t involve a remote control or movie ticket stub.

Currently I am going through some major stress related insomnia. Not sure how this is happening, but I have slept 3.5 hours in about 11 days. So if you feel like talking to me through the forums, its best if you pretend you are talking to a 4 year old. I am not understanding big words, these days. That said, I can usually be found lurking on the forums in the wee hours of the morning (pst). Stop by and give a shout out.
