I was never a health-conscious person and tended to snack constantly on things that were absolutely terrible for me. But through these little ways, I found that healthy snacking is not only possible for sweet toothers like me, it’s also really easy. There are tons of benefits to being healthy in our diets, as we all know, but even the seemingly negligible little in-betweens matter. If you’re looking for simple ways to improve your eating, these tips may just help you do that. More
Dates are pretty trendy in culinary circles right now — but are they good for you? Yes! And you don’t need to be a fancy chef to reap the benefits. Even drugstores like Rite-Aid and Walgreens sell boxes of pitted dates, making them a convenient and economical way to get a healthy dose of fiber, B vitamins and minerals while satisfying your craving for something sweet. As a result of my serious affinity for the most beautiful and delightful food in the world, I have encountered numerous recipes pertaining to avocado. And because Super Bowl Sunday is coming up in just a couple days, when Americans will eat 79 million pounds of avocados in 24 hours, I think right about now is a good time to share some fun, tasty ideas with you readers. Obviously, the most perfect snacks are the least processed — fruit, raw vegetables, raw seeds and nuts. But sometimes even the healthiest eaters among us crave a damn potato chip. In an attempt to build some sort of a meal out of the airport convenience store today, I stumbled across Food Should Taste Good sweet potato tortilla chips, and I am happy to report they’re not only good — salty, crispy, kind of like a more sweet potato flavored version of the ‘Potato Skin chips made by Keebler — but full of stuff that’s good for you, too. If you’re craving a snack that’s savory and sweet, try making your own chocolate-covered cashews. The combination of raw nuts, dark chocolate (or cacao) and spices make this an antioxidant-rich, healthy snack that satisfies chocolate cravings without sacrificing nutrition. And it’s also really, really easy to make. More
Yesterday, I was a big Negative Nancy and highlighted the worst, most unhealthy vending machine snacks a person could feel themselves. But, because this is a website for Positive Penelopes, I wanted to also highlight the fact that, sometimes, there are some not-awful choices in there, too. Here are your best vending machine picks. Road trips are awesome. Sunglasses on, windows down, and music cranked, summer is the perfect time to drive, whether you’re on a quick jaunt across town or a cross-country journey. One thing that’s not so awesome? The eating options on the road. Gas stations and truck stops offer a plethora of junk food—chips, candy and other crappy options are de rigueur on America’s highways (like you need sugar and salt laden foods after sitting hours in the car, yuck). Luckily, we asked some of our favorite food bloggers to share recipes for healthy road trip snacks. More
If you were just to look at sites like Pinterest and Tumblr, you’d think everyone on the planet is always either eating in lavish restaurants, or making beautiful, artful, organic, sustainable meals for themselves. But The Eatery, which Blisstree staffers are using to log our meals this week, has made me realize a more truthful reality: That sometimes I eat some pretty weird foods which I may not want to share on the internet, and that I’m probably not alone. Camping season is nearly upon us, which means around the country, people are snatching up bags of high-energy sustenance, like trail mix. Unfortunately, most store-bought mixes are loaded with sugar and salt, and are basically the opposite of healthy. Instead of picking up the Kirkland-brand mega-sack, why not try to make your own healthy, homemade trail mix? More
We all do it. Mid-afternoon rolls around and so does our hunger. For some reason, reaching for the salty, sugary, high-fat foods seems very tempting around 3 or 4:00. That could be due to the fact that our energy levels tend to slump then so we gravitate towards something quick and filling. Sugars can be especially tempting because they temporarily make us feel better by causing a spike in our blood sugar, but then we end up feeling worse when that blood sugar plummets again. So what’s a hungry girl to do? Well, this week on Pimp My Health, we’re going to pimp your snacks. We’ve done some research and rounded up five very healthy–and satisfying–snacks you can enjoy mid-afternoon without the guilt. Take a look: More
Plant sterols are a type of heart-healthy phytochemical thought to lower bad cholesterol when consumed regularly. They’re in a group of micronutrients with sulfur compounds and flavonoids (another nutrition buzzword you’ve probably heard) that may be important in reducing the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries. According to the American Heart Association, “substantial evidence” exists that these micronutrients can lower heart disease risk. In honor of February being American Heart Month, I interviewed Ramona Cappello, CEO and founder of Corazonas Foods, which makes snacks like oatmeal squares, tortilla chips and potato chips that are fortified with plant sterols.
