America’s Healthiest Pets

Health.com recently had a write up about America’s healthiest pets, and the results really aren’t that surprising.

In fact, they seem to follow the statistics for America’s most popular pets as well.
Their first pet on their list is dogs, followed by cats, fish, birds, hamsters (no “p,” health.com!) and — the only non-housepet — horses.
The animals were picked according to the benefits they can afford to humans. Things like how active the pet is (which means you’re more likely to be active as well), to the calming benefits of petting or whether the animal has a “hypoallergenic” coat that …read more

20 Healthy Foods Under $1

With the economy the way it is, many people are having to trim their budgets where they can. More often than not it’s usually the grocery list that suffers since it’s a common misconception that healthier food is too expensive
However, Divine Caroline has written out a list of the top 20 healthy foods under $1. It includes some you’d expect like apples, beans and bananas, but also foods like eggs, oats, and coffee:
“The old cup-o-joe has been thrown on the stands for many a corporeal crime—heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis—but exonerated on all counts. In fact, coffee, which is derived …read more

National Start Walking Day

For getting (and staying) in shape there is no better exercise than walking. It’s easy on the joints, you don’t need special equipment, and you can do it anywhere. You can even do it in the comfort of your home with some of the walking DVDs that are on the market. (Like the one we’re giving away here at Blisstree.)

To show you just how easy it is to walk for your health, the American Heart Association has started a National Start! Walking Day. The day is April 8th, and you are encouraged to participate!
The movement has …read more

Eat Less, Live Longer

Want to live a longer, healthier life? Who doesn’t, right?

A new article on MSN has six simple hints for living longer. A couple items on the list truly surprised me. I knew, for example, that eating a healthy diet was key to longer live, but what about eating less altogether? Eating less means pushing yourself away from the table when you’re 80% full.
This act alone can lower “production of T3, a thyroid hormone that slows metabolism.” It is also believed to help with longer life.

What Gets You in the Mood?

I’m a little bit conservative, so it often leads to major gaps in sex. Basically, if someone isn’t a serious part of my life, I am not getting naked with them. And because of that, I am a little bit concerned about these news reports that an active sex life will make you live longer and be healthier. Does that mean that my lack of sex is not only leaving me frustrated and cranky…but…leading to my DEATH?
Great.
Maybe. Researchers at Queens University in Belfast say that sex makes our pelvic muscles stronger, which helps prevent incontinence. And scholars at Wilkes University …read more

Are school lunches heart healthy- take my poll

Do you think that school lunches are healthy? I remember growing up- pizza, sloppy joe, burger and fries… Now there is baked chicken, spaghetti and meat sauce, tuna on wheat, peanut butter celery and a salad and veggie on every tray. Much better then what I remember. Do you think school lunches are heart healthy?
When my eldest started school I packed her lunch out of fear of ‘what the heck would she get on a school lunch tray’? Now with my older two at school- they buy lunch about 50% of the time. To be totally honest, I think the …read more

Here is what fitness extraordinare Mark Sissa has to offer…
I Don’t Have Time to Exercise!
Yep, the old standby. You’re gonna have to do better than that!
Hi, I’m Mark Sisson. Being an official “fitness guy” (more on that in a bit), Kendra thought it would be a good idea for me to stop by and share my heart-healthy exercise tips. We agreed that simply sharing how-to tips would not be sufficient – because everyone knows they need to work out. The problem is that everything gets in the way: the three kids, the …read more
