Not all headaches are warnings of a stroke, not all chest pains are the onset of a heart attack, you need to learn the signs to look for. If you have shortness of breath and sweating, this is your body telling you that something more serious going on.

There are normal headaches caused by stress, eyestrain or allergies this type of headache will fade. If the headaches persist you should see your health care provider. If you experience a headache that feels as if your head will explode and it persists you need to see your health care provider immediately, this could be the sign of bleeding in the brain.

Patients going to an emergency room that are aware of what is going on within their body, can actually help the doctor to diagnose their problem more efficiently.

I found an article that has six serious medical symptoms listed, that would be great to copy and place somewhere so that you could have easy access to it.

To find the article click here Six Serious Medical Symptoms.

I don’t know how to relate this to diabetes or heart disease, but being an American, I must write about this today September the 11th… so I am sharing this here as well…

I still remember like it was yesterday… I was in room 435 with the patient in A bed when the patient on the other side of the curtain screamed, “Oh my God, we are under attack”. I remember turning to see what the hell was going on, and everything just sort of going into slow motion. A few other doctors, nurses and visitors had peeked their heads in as well as we watched a God awful scene on the television set.

The hair on my arms was standing straight up, my stomach was turning, I felt shear horror and I had tears rolling down my face. I had no clue, nor did the rest of the world, what was actually happening in front of my eyes. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any scarier… the second plane flew clear through the second World Trade building.

As we regrouped and had a small briefing at the hospital, as we were only 40 miles from our Nation’s capitol , all I could think was, “I just want to hold my daughter”. At the time our eldest was about 10 months old and my husband was working from home 2 days a week. He was at home with her on September the 11th, 2001. And I was 35 miles away… though it seemed like 100’s.

Then we heard all kinds of reports, “there were 5 planes missing, no 3 planes missing, and one is headed right for D.C.” Horror was the feeling. Once again, we were only about a half an hour from D.C. and could get overflow or be needed to assist in any way we could. It was the unknown…

Being on a cardiac critical care floor, we had to keep focus and keep on with our duties. Just imagine the fear that these patients with wires coming out of their chests that were serving as temporary pacemakers and the very ill, frail patients that could not walk if their lives depended on it felt. It was so damn scary.

I can remember looking around and seeing grown men with tears running down their faces and looks of hopelessness and fear. I can remember looking around at my fellow nurses, physicians and surgeons and thinking, “he looks like “them”, could he be part of this terror”?

I will never forget all the men, women and children that lost their lives that day, September 11th, 2001 to terrorists with nothing but rage, anger and hate inside of them. And I thank my lucky stars everyday that there are men and women out there that put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms while their families await their safe returns. I hope that today, everyone takes a moment to reflect on what exactly took place that day in New York. I am so proud to live in the United States of America and do not take my freedom for granted. I have taught my kids why we wear our red, white and blue on this day and to always remember we live in the land of the free. God Bless the United States of America…

However, it was also reported that no autopsy had been performed. No official determination has been released by the medical examiner’s office or filed with the Memphis health department, which issues death certificates.

Kelsey presented to the hospital feeling faint and tired. Most likely his irregular heart beat is caused by his medication he is taking to help with his heart muscle and post MI effects. Good luck to him- hope he is back on his feet soon!

The same results were not found among women but the study was started in 1990- which was a time before heart disease became so prevalent among women. There just wasn’t as many women in the study to begin with.

Perhaps we should concentrate on the fact that we have so many tools to help prevent a heart attack instead of worrying ourselves sick over if we will actually fall victim to one.

“Calcium scoring is helpful to see if somebody has coronary disease,” she said. “It’s not as helpful to determine … where critical blockages are or which plaque is going to cause a problem. It’s a good screening test. We go from there to try to reduce the risk of having a heart attack.”
With a positive test the patient then has the knowledge to go and have a stress test and ultimately a cath to fix any blockages.

This is interesting. Since Tim Russert’s sudden cardiac death appointments with cardiologists are up and awareness is at an all time high.
“Any time a celebrity has a medical problem that hits the news, there’s a heightened awareness of the condition. That’s human nature,” said Dr. Stephen Green, chief of cardiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. “We’ve been seeing more people coming into the emergency room and scheduling appointments.”
Good does come out of hardship and sadness. Are you up to date with your cardiology appointments?

Kelsey Grammer suffered a heart attack this weekend…
Sources say Kelsey was swimming on the beach in Kona when he had the attack and that his heart definitely stopped for a few seconds. The Cheers star had to be airlifted by helicopter from Kona to Honolulu for tests and treatment.
Hopefully he will bounce right back. Get well… I loved Cheers!!!!!!

I was examining my search items for this site as of recent and found quite a few for heterotaxy. So this is a Dear Kendra of sorts…
What is heterotaxy?
First, heterotaxy has a prevalence of less then 0.1% but is thought to account for1% of infant mortality. Heterotaxy is also called asplenia. Asplenia is a heterogeneous disease that primarily affects the asymmetric organs, including the heart, liver, intestines, and spleen. Heterogeneous meaning genetic. Primarily, this disease includes cyanotic congenital heart disease, asplenia, and intestinal malrotation. Asplenia is thought to have some familial predisposition.

Embryologically, it results from failure of development of right-left asymmetry. All thoracic and abdominal organs can be affected but the function of these organs is affected minimally.

Cardiac manifestations can range from minor to severe and are related to incomplete or impaired rotation of the heart. Common cardiac findings- persistence of a left-sided superior vena cava (SVC), anomalous pulmonary venous return, common atrium, endocardial cushion defects, and double outlet right ventricle. In addition, bilateral right atrial appendages may be present in at least 20% of patients with asplenia, and their presence is diagnostic of this syndrome.

Abdominal findings can include asplenia, transverse liver, and intestinal malrotation. Biliary tract abnormalities have also been described but are rarely of clinical significance.

Without surgery in the first year of life the mortality rate is upward of 95%. The 5 year mortality rate still stays high at 50%.

I have personally only run into 3 patients over the last 12 years that have had heterotaxy. One adult, two teen girls and they had each underwent some surgeries and have been on medication including antibiotics for most of their lives but otherwise were happy and leading a fulfilling life.
