Ambitious title, I know.

Luckily, I am not the one responsible for coming up with the ways. Leave that to www.nursingschoolsearch.com who has compiled this nifty little list for you. They aren’t all focused on “greening” your life. There are items for every day detox, eliminating social as well as physical poisons. There are tips to avoid productivity drainers, tips on meditating, organizing, and simplifying your life. Here’s a sample:

Purifying Your Environment

This list features different ways that you can purify your environment and ensure that your home, office and commute are free of all kinds of pollutants.

Drive an eco-friendly car: An electric car is good for the environment and your health, since you won’t have to breathe in toxic fumes at the gas station.

Walk or bike to work: Another way to prevent inhalation of gas fumes is to walk or bike to work, if you can find a route that doesn’t involve riding behind other gas guzzling vehicles.

Grow a garden: Grow your own vegetables to cut back on pesticides and environmentally harmful packaging and delivery methods.

Make your own household cleaning products: There are a lot of recipes online for concocting your own supply of household cleaning products, free of dangerous chemicals and chlorine.

Composting: Recycle your waste and feed your garden by composting.

Keep plants indoors: Having plants indoors increases oxygen production and zaps up extra carbon dioxide, purifying your air.

Aromatherapy: Natural aromatherapy can be a great help to simple ailments and colds, and it’s also a good stress reliever.

Throw away pet waste: Clean out the cat’s litter box and pick up after your dog, even in the backyard, to prevent the spread of bacteria that can make you and your family sick.

Air quality: Make sure the air quality in your home or office is healthy by ventilating the rooms, changing out your air filters and using natural home furnishings and carpet.

Sustainability: Sustainable living is an ethical and practical way to live, as it saves you money on energy costs and is good for the environment. Get tips for living a sustainable, poison-free lifestyle here.

Of course, some things are easier said than done, like “de-stress at work” and “eliminate distractions.” There are no earth shattering pronouncements here. Nothing that will catch you by surprise. This simply is a handy little list with tips on living better for those of us that enjoy lists.

Which is me.

And maybe you.

We’re not talking tiny things here, we’re talking about actually turning the TV on as you are leaving the house “so the dogs won’t get lonely.”

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Do you say something? Do you take this opportunity to talk about some things that could do the earth (and their electric bill) good? What if you’ve already had that conversation? Do you pull the cans out of the trash and find a recycling place yourself? Or do you just suck it up for a week and enjoy your vacation and your hosts’ hospitality?

What would you do?

First, it was the (very publicly) waxed chest of Harrison Ford, now, pro beach volleyball player Colleen Smith will sport a huge (1/2 meter long) temporary tattoo of crashing waves to raise awareness of rising sea levels due to global warming. Colleen says, “Educating volleyball fans is huge. This is where I have leverage.” In addition to leverage, Colleen also has a ton of green goodies including reusable totes, flourescent lightbulbs and tips to go green that she’s giving to her fans at tournaments this summer. *

I’m wondering, how do you feel about wearing your environmental views on your sleeve (or chest, or leg?) It’s a bit different than a bumper sticker, a little more permanent than a pin (like the one I received from the Sierra Club which proclaims, I’m here to save the planet) which I have yet to wear. I’ve also noticed a proliferation of going green t-shirts and apparel – Target, of all places, had a wall full of “green” tees, as did several other department stores. Right next to the designer jeans and other junior apparel.

So tell me, do you sport any green tees? Do you have any visual markers of your dedication to the environment and your health?

While I believe our lives are influenced by everyone we meet, I do agree that moms hold some special sway. Stand up straight! Don’t talk with your mouth full! Remember to say please and thank you…..All great life lessons, for sure. Here is a small collection of moms (there are many, many more) that are also teaching their kids to live mindfully, waste less, and care for the environment so they can share it with their own set of offspring:

The Ecomom Alliance -The Ecomom Alliance believes that one of nature’s strongest forces is a network of mothers. The Alliance inspires and empowers mothers to help reduce the climate crisis and create a sustainable future. In the process, they help to alleviate the isolation and overextension so common among mothers in contemporary society.

Punkymoms.com -Punkymoms is an awesome online community that just got cooler: Punky Moms is taking a more green approach to living, or at least a more vocal green approach. In addition to purchasing renewable energy cards to off-set their energy use, they are also getting ready to launch a green campaign. Included in the campaign will be new canvas shopping bags that come with samples from eco-conscious companies, coupons, a pamphlet about conservation and more. It’s an exciting time to be green, and we’re not just talking about your hair!

Treehugging Family – Visit Jennifer and Peggy daily to see how you and your family can live the “green life.” Their blog on the b5 Lifestyles channel is chock full of great and practical household tips, product reviews (including green toys!) and tons of useful links.

Kid’s Health Notes - Another b5 blogger, this time over here at the Health and Wellness Channel, Grace often writes about to teach your young ‘uns that caring about the health of the world around them can be fun and healthy for them as well, like this great post on “reusing.”
