“There is no lake at Camp Green Lake.” But there used to be, or so the legend goes. Sachar weaves two tales together: one of Stanley Yelnats’s brush with the law and Kate Barlow’s love story. When Stanley is sentenced to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility where boys dig holes to make them better characters, Stanley thinks his luck has run out.

Unknowingly, Stanley uncovers a wild plot by the warden and fate steps in to play a humorous if not ironic role in Stanley’s life. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something? Stanley digs up the truth and has to face his future and his past.
Sachar has written a deliciously funny tale full of adventure and mystery.
