The headlines don’t lie: The stage is ripe for eating disorders

Who can blame girls and women for obsessing over the shape of their bodies? Just take a gander at three of the weight-related news stories from the past week that I’ve listed below.
Kate Beckinsale eats dessert (probably a poached pear…) This article by Popeater is an interview with Beckinsale who claims that she no longer starves herself. Hm. Not sure what to believe. She’s not stick-skinny, but she’s not meaty, either. I guess by Hollywood’s standards she’s a horse?
The Dancing with the Stars “fat chicks” scandal has my blood boiling. Rumor has it that dancers Maksim Chmerkovsky and Louis van Amstel called …read more
Am I fat? Thin? Normal?

As I was indulging in this piece of drivel about the new 90210 starlets’ shrinking bodies, I was again struck by the realization that I have no idea what’s thin, what’s fat and what’s normal anymore.
I look in the mirror one day and say, “Okay, I look pretty healthy.” The next day, I can barely glance at my image. I have literally had to avoid looking at myself before I take a shower so I don’t start to obsess too much.
When did we get such a skewed view of what’s healthy, what’s appropriate? When did size zero become a viable …read more
Deceiver calls out Victoria Beckham for the thinspiration she’s become

I admit it — I like Deceiver.com. It’s a fun site to peruse when you’re determined to spend just another few minutes procrastinating.
Today, Deceiver’s uber bloggers are kvetching about Victoria Beckham. She’s claiming that it hurts her to have people say she’s abusing (or using in any form) diet pills.
I’m not sure where to start with that one.
First of all, the woman is obviously too thin for her frame. As one of Deceiver’s commenters pointed out, she has a “Pez Head” look (i.e., her body is much too small for her face.)
(I had to chuckle wryly at this one — I don’t know that the …read more
Et tu, Jennifer Love Hewitt?

I was so impressed when Jennifer Love Hewitt spat back at the nasty media last November/December. They (namely TMZ and the tabloids) called her fanny flabby; she told them to buzz off because she wasn’t fat. It was wonderful! A Hollywood A-lister finally understood how we “ordinary” gals felt! It was empowering.
That was then.
THIS is now.
Guess who’s snagged the cover of Us Weekly, smugly satisfied that she’s trimmed 18 pounds off her body (which she apparently DIDN’T think was fine)? I’ll give you one guess – her middle name is “love”, which is the opposite of how most people who are pro-recovery probably feel …read more
The Profit$ of Disordered Eating

No one profits from having an eating disorder… or do they?
During a recent trip to the grocery store, I spied a tabloid headline asking the question of whether Tara Reid was too thin again. The accompanying photo showed Ms. Reid in all her glory, clad only in a skimpy bikini. She was obviously emaciated.
At first, I thought, “How terrible! I hope she gets help!” But then I started to think about what it means to be anorexic or bulimic in Hollyweird. You see, in some strange way, I believe it can jettison an actor or actress into copious amounts of publicity.
Yes, …read more
