Freebirthing – a great idea or courting disaster?

Freebirthing, delivering your child at home without any healthcare professional present, even a midwife, is becoming more popular in some circles. Some women do take advantage of health care for prenatal tests and care, but then they choose to deliver at home with only their partner and/or family and friends present.

Not all physicians agree with the AMA’s position on home birth

What would we do without controversy? Homebirth and the stand of the American Medical Association (AMA) came into the forefront of news again when the AMA slapped Ricki Lake on the wrist for her film on home births (Tsk, tsk Ricki Lake).
There’s been a lot of going back and forth on the issue, but I’m heartened to see that some physicians are speaking out. If you pop over to Our Bodies, Our Blog, you’ll read about one physician who is disagreeing.

As I was browsing around, I found this interesting article, Thoughts on the AMA Homebirth “Ban,” Ricki Lake, and Midwifery, over at Women’s Health News.
Rather than go by bits and pieces of what may be in the news, including here at Womb Within, I recommend you read that article. It clarifies some issues quite well.

A few years ago, Ricki Lake had an at-home birth with a midwife and she has since self-funded a documentary called “The Business of Being Born.” It seems the American Medical Association feels that the documentary does women a disservice by promoting home births so they issued a resolution that highlights the dangers of home births.
