Some women do take advantage of health care for prenatal tests and care, but then they choose to deliver at home with only their partner and/or family and friends present.
If you read this article, Freebirthing: Is it madness or the ideal way to give birth?, the mothers seem to think that if they don’t worry about emergencies, they won’t happen.

I’m all for the power of positive thinking, but that seems – to me – to be really playing with fire. Not having any emergency plan or back up could result in disaster.

I’m all for women taking control of their bodies and their deliveries, I just have a huge issue with intentional unattended births.

What would we do without controversy? Homebirth and the stand of the American Medical Association (AMA) came into the forefront of news again when the AMA slapped Ricki Lake on the wrist for her film on home births (Tsk, tsk Ricki Lake).
There’s been a lot of going back and forth on the issue, but I’m heartened to see that some physicians are speaking out. If you pop over to Our Bodies, Our Blog, you’ll read about one physician who is disagreeing.

As I was browsing around, I found this interesting article, Thoughts on the AMA Homebirth “Ban,” Ricki Lake, and Midwifery, over at Women’s Health News.
Rather than go by bits and pieces of what may be in the news, including here at Womb Within, I recommend you read that article. It clarifies some issues quite well.
