Since the traditional St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) falls on Holy Week, some people are holding their celebrations today, March 15. Whenever you’re recognizing this day, have fun!

St. Patrick’s Day Memories 

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day when I was a child because our hired man (on a dairy farm in the Hudson River Valley of NYS) was Irish. He was somewhat a grandfather figure in our lives. We children always checked to see whether Dan wore the little green bow on his cap…he never forgot.

Mother cooked corned beef and cabbage or ham and cabbage because Dan took his meals with us.  She also often made a cake with green icing for dessert.  We children drew and colored shamrocks to hung around the room or use as place markers at the table.

My grandchildren, when younger, set up a maze of string and yarn around the living/dining room…a “leprechaun catcher.” But Sir Leprechaun was too clever for them! Ah! the memories though.
