They tell you that pregnancy will be, on average 40 weeks long. What “they” don’t tell you is that the last few weeks of that 40 weeks is way, way longer than the first few weeks.
For some reason, those last few weeks are even longer as they go beyond their due date. At some point, the doctor will likely suggest inducing your labor if your body doesn’t seem to want to do it on its own.

I know, it’s hard. You’ve been pregnant for what feels like forever. You’re bigger than you ever have been, you’re uncomfortable, the baby likes to use your bladder as a punching bag – when he or she isn’t sitting on it, and you haven’t been able to eat your favorite foods since you realized that baby doesn’t like it either. So, it’s tempting to try to speed things up a little bit – especially if all this is taking place in the heat of summer.

I’ve been there and, honestly, I did speed things up for my second and third children. My first one weighed in at over 9 pounds and he wasn’t an easy delivery. To this day, I feel he should have been a c-section. So, in my determination not to have any more monster-sized babies, my other two were born two weeks early. With my first, I went into labor immediately after the doctor broke my water, so chances are I would have gone into labor soon anyway, and with the my third, I think I may have had three drops of induction med before I was in full-blown labor, giving birth just 2.5 hours later. Both children, born at 38 weeks, were almost 8 pounds. To be honest though, we did have a legitimate reason to bring number 3 out early as it looked like he may have some problems – thankfully, he did not.

Now, we’re learning that even those last couple of weeks are important and we shouldn’t be rushing them. According this article, Expectant Moms Should Wait Out Due Date For Deliveries, Experts Urge, the baby is still using those final weeks to fine tune and finish developing.

So, no matter how tempting it is, remember that the end is in sight – hang in there!

If so, I’ve got good news for you. It’s Baby Week over at Discovery and here are a couple of episodes that I think Womb Within visitors may enjoy watching:

DELIVER ME: Episode, Now or Never
Premieres Tuesday, June 10 at 8 PM ET/PT
Complex pregnancies and high-risk births—these are worries for many parents-to-be, but they are everyday occurrences for Drs. Alane Park, Yvonne Bohn and Allison Hill. Discovery Health’s new docu-series, DELIVER ME, follows the careers and lives of these three dynamic women—best friends who became partners in a demanding Los Angeles OB/GYN practice. In this episode, cancer survivor Terri Harrah approaches her due date, but when the large size of her baby makes a natural delivery risky, Alane has to decide between inducing a pre-term labor or proceeding to Caesarian section. Meanwhile, Claudia Lima is about to become a mother for the third time – sixteen years after her most recent child – but a bleeding scare lands her in the hospital, putting her life, and the pregnancy, in jeopardy. And doctor becomes patient when Kay May Kwok, a resident training in OB/GYN, prepares to join Yvonne, Alane, and Allison in the unique society of moms who deliver babies.

AMAZING BIRTHS: Episode 2
Airs Thursday, June 12 at 8 PM ET/PT
Amazing Births is a thrilling, fast-paced one-hour program that introduces us to remarkable mothers from around the world – mothers who never made it to hospital — mothers compelled to give birth without medical help, in extreme situations. Their incredible stories are brought to life through dramatic re-enactments, actual 911 telephone recordings, intimate first hand interviews, and real-life home video footage. In this episode, meet a woman who went into labor during the worst ice storm in 50 years. Then, a Girl Scout who performed the ultimate deed and helped her mother deliver her baby. Finally, follow a lady whose car was turned into a roadside delivery room.
