Swaddle Designs Wins Two iParenting Media Awards

I believe in swaddling, with good reason. My first son loves deep pressure because I believe he was swaddled for most of his first two years in the Russian orphanage. I also believe most children love being held tightly. They feel more secure and fall asleep better and more quickly (shh…it’s my secret weapon).
So, it’s no wonder that SwaddleDesigns zzZipMe Sack and SwaddleDesigns Marquisette Swaddling Blanket won the iParenting Media Awards for best products for 2009.
SwaddleDesigns founder, Lynette Damir, is a Registered Nurse and is very proud of the new products.

Formula Storage

Formula Storage

Formula storage is one of the most tricky things about feeding a baby so I recommend purchasing a formula travel case and packing extra, empty bottles.
To properly store formula:

Feed your baby prepared formula immediately.
Immediately refrigerate prepared formula up to 24 hours.
Discard any extra formula after one hour because bacteria can grow VERY quickly.

If you are traveling, use the formula dispenser.

Formula and Milk Heating

Formula is absolutely fabulous for us moms who can not or do not have the ability to nurse. Whatever brand you chose to use, Enfamil, Similac, Carnation Good Start, Parent’s Choice, make sure to follow certain protocols.
How to properly warm formula: the best way to heat a bottle of formula is to heat a bowl of water in the microwave and then place the previously prepared bottle in the bowl of hot water for a few minutes to warm. If you are short on time, warm water from the faucet but make sure to check the water on your wrist …read more

Breastfeeding Builds Lung Capacity

Breastfeeding Builds Lung Capacity

Dr. Ikechukwu U. Ogbuanu from the University of South Carolina in Columbia recently found that children who were breastfed for 4 months or longer had larger lung capacities by the time they were 10 years old than children who were not.
While the children’s speedier exhalations could have been related to the beneficial components of breast milk, “the lung capacity cannot be really explained by the immune factors in the breast milk,” Ogbuanu told Reuters Health.
Most likely though, is that it is more difficult to drink from a breast than a bottle.

Nebraska’s Revision of Safe Haven Law

The revised safe haven law will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday December 1. The new law states that parents can only drop off children who are 30 days or younger.
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman says the revised law protects only newborn babies like the law was originally supposed to.
Although lawmakers approved the revision they do know they have a bigger problem with mental health care and human services.

Take care of baby’s teeth, before they’re out

Do you ever think that because your baby doesn’t have teeth yet, we shouldn’t think about dentists and tooth hygiene?
I confess that I do.
Until my children’s dentists told me I should be more diligent about keeping my baby’s mouth clean. Our dentist reminded me that dental care starts very early in the child’s life because of several reasons. Babies don’t have bacteria when they are born, but bacteria is easily passed to their mouth. Bacteria can grow in the baby’s mouth and gums which can cause cavities even while teeth are just coming out. Tooth decay early …read more
