Rationing sick and vacation hours

I am fortunate to have a job that has paid sick and vacation days.
Before I had children, and, aging parents, I didn’t think much of the hours, they were there if I needed them, and, I accrued them at some rate or another, it didn’t really matter much.
But, then along came children, and, I had to use all of the vacation and sick hours for maternity leave, thus beginning the endless cycle of accruing them and using them all in the same motion.
