I was thrilled today when I arrived home to a parcel in the mail. What could it be? Turns out I’d won a book by our very own Tammy Powley, who blogs about Jewelry & Beading for B5media.com, too. The book? Making Designer Seed Bead, Stone, and Crystal Jewelry.

I won the book by responding to one of those “In 25 words or less…” competitions in a magazine. These competitions make great journal writing or general writing prompts. I see them in every magazine I pick up. Not only are you forced to express yourself in a limited number of words, but you stand the chance of actually winning something.

You can snip them out of magazines and stash them in the pocket in the back of your journal to use later, even if you don’t end up entering. Not all of the competitions are boring. I won this book by writing about something I really enjoy when I’m sitting around with the family in the evenings. If the prompt itself seems a bit narrow, use your imagination and write about an aspect of the question. Really, the idea is simply to write on something you might not normally consider.

That’s just one of my pet peeves about shopping. As I groaned about it I described in great detail my solution to this problem. I invented my hassle free way of shopping. Who knows how realistic my solution is, but it was certainly an idea for the future.

Today spend some time writing in your journal working on a solution to a problem you have in your day to day life. It could be at work or in the home. It might just be like mine, a minor complaint you have over the way things are done now. Who knows, you may come up with a useful way to reduce smog, traffic or just make a job easier. A lot of inventions are created by ordinary people with a need for a simpler life.

Once again the week winds down to Freaky Friday. If you need to know more about this journal writing challenge please read the First Freaky Friday post.

My daughter has recently been looking for a full-time job since completing study and has been going through the process of applying for jobs and attending interviews. This process heightened my own awareness of preparing for interviews. The wheels have been spinning in my mind to come up with this Freaky Friday prompt.

If you have already been through the interview process it’s a lot easier to imagine how things will go. It doesn’t make the activity any less intimidating, but with this prompt you may just feel better prepared to show your best qualities for your next interview.

Today spend some time writing in your journal as if you are the interviewer for the job you are applying for, or your dream job if you are already employed. There’s a list of standard interview questions to help you out here. You may want to answer some or all of these, as yourself, before attempting this journal writing exercise. Then you can review your answers as the Freaky Friday interviewer.

The point of this exercise is to see yourself as the prospective boss, or interviewer, will see you. This might help you focus on other areas or polish up what you do have to offer your new employer. Let me know if this helps at all or if you have any questions by using the comments section below.

By the way, my daughter received a job offer yesterday. Today she accepted.

5. Date your entry. This may seem a real drag, but I would suggest this is the only real rule when it comes to keeping a journal. You’ll be amazed just how useful having each entry dated can be. I’m constantly looking back through my journal to confirm some fact in our family or to help work out some vague point.

6. Start writing. Just write whatever comes to mind. You may need a journal prompt. There’s plenty online or use the link I just provided. There are heaps of prompts in this blog. If you do use the link continue to press the link at the end of each page, Previous Entries, for even more prompts. You may also find the Timed Writing entry useful.

7. Be creative. Try different techniques, such as lists, collage, drawing, other visual styles, or whatever takes your fancy. Your journal is a place to express your thoughts and emotions. Forget the rules and what others expect. Play with ideas and use your journal for your own benefit.

Part three tomorrow.
