True Confessions: The Weird Foods Women Eat While Alone

True Confessions: The Weird Foods Women Eat While Alone

If you were just to look at sites like Pinterest and Tumblr, you’d think everyone on the planet is always either eating in lavish restaurants, or making beautiful, artful, organic, sustainable meals for themselves. But The Eatery, which Blisstree staffers are using to log our meals this week, has made me realize a more truthful reality: That sometimes I eat some pretty weird foods which I may not want to share on the internet, and that I’m probably not alone. 6 Junk Food Museums Not To Visit This Summer

6 Junk Food Museums Not To Visit This Summer

Last week I read that SPAM, the iconic and repugnant canned meat, is celebrating its 75th birthday. And while I was impressed at SPAM’s longevity (does anyone who regularly eats the high-sodium pressed ham live that long?), I was much more interested to also read that SPAM has a museum. A museum! For SPAM! Which got me thinking about all of the other junk food museums that tourists will be visiting this summer. Turns out, there are several. More »

Let’s Just Say It: Most Juice Is Junk Food (Basically)

Let's Just Say It: Most Juice Is Junk Food (Basically)

For much of my young life, I believed one of the biggest health misconceptions there is: that soda is unhealthy, and juice is good for you. Unfortunately, it’s just not that simple. Yes, homemade juice that contains nutrient-dense fruits and veggies is a good way to get some added nutrients. But in terms of sugar, nutrition, calories, and the potential for questionable additives, the truth is that most juice is basically junk food, plain and simple, and should be viewed as such. More »

Cut The Crap, Nestle–Of Course Girl Scout Candy Bars Are Marketed Toward Children

Cut The Crap, Nestle--Of Course Girl Scout Candy Bars Are Marketed Toward Children

Nestlé would like you to know that it is definitely, definitely not marketing its new line of Girl Scout candy bars to children, because they promised they weren’t going to do that anymore. But last time I checked, the Girl Scouts were pretty clearly associated with childhood. And although Nestlé agreed not to market to children under age 12 via the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, it’s blatantly obvious that these candy bars are in violation of that agreement–no matter what the all-powerful company is saying. ‘Simple’ Junk Food: When 5 Ingredients Or Less Isn’t Good For You

'Simple' Junk Food: When 5 Ingredients Or Less Isn't Good For You

“Don’t eat anything with more than five ingredients, or ingredients you can’t pronounce,” is, according to Michael Pollan‘s Food Rules, a pretty easy way to prevent your diet from going off the rails. And while focusing on simple, high-quality ingredients is definitely a great way to frame a healthy diet, unfortunately it’s also become a genius way to market junk food. Because while Pollan’s common sense advice has become the bible for health-inclined consumers, it’s also become the bible for advertisers and food manufacturers. Which means…even his dummy-proof rules are getting more complicated–including judging a food by its ingredients. More »

Don’t Fool Yourself: Kraft Whipped Peanut Butter Has Fewer Calories Per Serving, But It’s Still Junk

Don't Fool Yourself: Kraft Whipped Peanut Butter Has Fewer Calories Per Serving, But It's Still Junk

In the U.S., we don’t get eat a lot of Kraft peanut butter. But the teddy-bear-swaddled product is a Canadian staple, whose success the food manufacturer is hoping to re-create with a new, gross-sounding twist on the old standard: whipped peanut butter. But don’t be tricked by Kraft’s crafty marketing: this isn’t a low-calorie solution to your protein needs. This is junk food. More »

Video: Vending Machine Sells Shame, Not Snacks

Video: Vending Machine Sells Shame, Not Snacks

Selling junk food in schools is a hot-button issue, because, while vending machines make money for cash-strapped districts, stocking them with crap doesn’t really teach kids about how to make healthy decisions. But what about a vending machine that wouldn’t take money, wouldn’t give out junk food…and only sold lessons? That’s what the LiVe Machine does. In theory it’s kind of a cool idea, but I’m not quite sure the snarky execution of this is quite right for kids. More »

America Realizes Twinkies Are Terrible For You, Sends Hostess Into Bankruptcy

America Realizes Twinkies Are Terrible For You, Sends Hostess Into Bankruptcy

If you’re into that sort of thing, you may want to start stockpiling Twinkies and Wonder Bread, because they may not be on the shelves much longer. Hostess, the iconic American bakery, is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy…and, according to the Wall Street Journal, the company’s own Twinkie may be to blame. But pointing the finger at the Twinkie seems a bit like blaming the victim. Because the real killer of Hostess’s profits probably isn’t the snack cake itself, but rather changing American eating habits, and a greater awareness of health and nutrition. More »

Healthy Junk: Better Alternatives To Packaged Health Food

Healthy Junk: Better Alternatives To Packaged Health Food

I won’t lie–being a health writer gives me a false sense of piousness. So when everyone else was resolving to eat a more healthy diet, I was sitting pretty on my high horse, wearing my Smuggly, thinking about how clean and pure and lacking in junk food mine already was. And then I put sugary soy milk in my coffee and made dinner with sodium-laden canned tomato sauce. Hello, pot? This is the kettle speaking. I hate to be the one to tell you this but…mmm….well….you’re black. More »
